Charlton Athletic Football Club is an English professional association football club based in Charlton, south-east London. They currently compete in the EFL Championship, the second tier of English football. The club was founded on 9 June 1905 when a number of youth clubs in south-east London, including East Street Mission and Blundell Mission, combined to form Charlton Athletic. Their home ground is the Valley, where the club have played since 1919, apart from one year in Catford, during 1923–24, and seven years at Crystal Palace and West Ham United between 1985 and 1992, due to financial issues, and then safety concerns raised by the local council. The club's fans formed the Valley Party, nominating candidates to stand in local elections, in a bid to return the club to The Valley.

Charlton turned professional in 1920 and first entered the Football League in 1921. Since then the club has had four separate periods in the top flight of English football: 1936–1957, 1986–1990, 1998–1999, and 2000–2007. Historically, Charlton's most successful period was the 1930s, when the club's highest league finishes were recorded, including runners-up of the First Division in 1937. After World War II, Charlton reached two consecutive FA Cup finals, losing in 1946, and winning in 1947.

The club's traditional kit consists of red shirts, white shorts and red socks, and their most commonly used nickname is The Addicks. Charlton share local rivalries with fellow South East London clubs Crystal Palace and Millwall.

Remember it well it was a Tuesday night and another of those matches which led to the departure of an opposing manager with one of the 100 Belgian managers that Athletic had was summary potted after their next game on the following Saturday, cruised to victory Gallagher got two. Good football ground pity those tossers have shifted it to Sunday up at 4 am I think not.

The match referee for this weekend’s televised trip to face Charlton Athletic at The Valley is David Webb.

We are seeing David for the second time this season, having had him officiated the Carabao Cup second round penalty victory over Hull City at Deepdale back in September.

That was his first game at Deepdale since 2016, when he had the whistle in PR1 for our 2-0 home win over Peterborough United in the middle of the 2015/16 campaign.
Last season he officiated two PNE games, the away matches at Birmingham City and Derby County.
Overall then he has refereed the Lilywhites on 12 occasions, some of the most memorable games including the FA Cup win at Wycombe Wanderers, when Kevin Davies scored a stunning strike from 35 yards, and a 3-2 home win over Crewe Alexandra in 2011 in the league cup.

Overall this season, he has taken charge of ten games, issuing 25 cautions and no red cards, with this being his first game officiating the Addicks in 2019/20.

He will be assisted at The Valley by assistants Graham Kane and Adrian Waters, whilst the fourth official will be Craig Hicks.

A rare visit to Charlton this century to take on a home side that has made a surprisingly good start to the season presently lie 9th under manager Lee Bowyer with a non too shabby home record.
Still have slight off field issues with their owner but all considering doing well. Will be difficult on Sunday in front of the cameras. We cannot afford to be as crap as we were in the first half last week or at the Mad Stad otherwise we will get beat.
Still without Clarke and Moult so suspect pretty much the same side that started against the bog dwellers last week.

Finally it would be remiss of me not to mention the finest side ever to play at the valley, Daltrey, Townsend, Moon and Entwistle in 1976 a concert that was even broadcast live on the Beeb just a pity this game is not starting at 5.15.

More of a Kinks man myself. The Who did not have the subtlety of The Kinks for my liking. Sky faffing you around again.

    0-0 Half time
Had more possession created some good chances not taken them Barkhuizen having the best when Charlton ballsed up at the back keeper bailed them out, they have had two good chances Gallagher header closest. Addicts seem to be playing on the break suspect one goal only in this.
A nice dive by Gallagher gets them a free kick whilst Pearson fall called disgraceful.
Need to be more clinical , Saar looks a weak link for them still take a point.

TOP OF THE LEAGUE FOR 24 HOURS NEVER IN DOUBT

Charlton Athletic 0 Preston North End 1

Job done second half early home pressure before Stockley wrestled to the ground by Pearce, Gallagher didn't miss after that professionally saw the game out some would call it ****housing I would call it getting job done. A couple of iffy moments at the end but thought in the main we were comfortable and the sight of the manager sharing a joke with those on the bench does not suggest that this man is going anywhere else.
Job done onto some strange side from Yorkshire next week however Pearson missing fifth booking but now up to others to come in and done the job, big statement of intent yesterday with the manager and today on the pitch.

Barkhuissen could have assisted Pearson to make it 0-2 to NE. Job done, solid performance et cetera. At this time of the season, it is what is demanded. top of the Championship, but West Brom a game in hand and they are playing Stoke. I reckon a good thrashing of Stoke will see off any chance of Neil transferring to that club. Anyway, the Stoke governance is not that good. Who would be tempted?

    Neil staying

    Charlton boss Lee Bowyer:

"A draw would probably have been a fair result but we will learn. It was a penalty. One of our most experienced players has made the wrong decision.

"They're an experienced side who have been in that situation a lot. So it can be frustrating. But maybe we've got to learn to start doing that ourselves.

"On clear-cut chances I would have said it was quite even. But we were sloppy in possession, probably the worst we've been. We gave the ball away a lot. A frustrating day."

    Preston boss Alex Neil:

"The fact that I took Paul Gallagher off last week only means that I got the team selection wrong. This time he comes on and gets the winner.

"That's why we are a team, not a group of individuals. We were good value for the win.

"We were the better side, created the better chances. That was a tough game and we did well to win it."
