In fairness we hadn't come back to win a game in over 3 year until Rafa and I preferred the 'boring' football to those common capitulations under Pardew. Despite what people say Pardew's football was just as drab, aside from 6 month of the season we finished 5th and had good players. In defence of Benitez he had a pretty ageing squad at Inter and was given little money to change it. It was a ****ing good team though, a bit comparable to clough rocking up at Leeds. I read they didn't like him almost schooling them on tactics. They preferred Mourinho's arms round the player style, fair enough. That's hard to replicate now and Mourinho hasn't actually managed it himself since Inter. That last season at Liverpool was a **** up but you're sort of glossing over the time before that. A CL win and good prem challenge wasn't bad. Klopp's done roughly the same. Alonso for Aquilani was an awful idea but it's ignored he bought Alonso in the first place. Not sure where you get this accepting of bigger budgets. Top of the league for transfer profit when he was here yet wed spunked money up the wall on Mclaren. It will always come down to opinion. I don't think the 'Rafa is god' stuff was about him solely as a manager, more that he represented hope and possibilities at a club that had seen little for a decade. I liked him criticising the club. God knows I was fed up of the towing the party line **** we got from Pards and will now get from Bruce. The players didn't suffer for his comments and come on, have you seen the training facilities? It breaks my heart to watch our team sat around in the kind of paddling pool you see in most gardens come summer. The club made promises to improve facilities which they never kept. All this stiff upper lip and pretend it doesn't exist attitude gets no respect from me. Don't like being patronised to as if I'm thick enough to buy bullshit about 'lines' and blaming it on everything but the fact the club had under invested (remember Pardew's list of excuses). Think the point through all this from fans has been Bruce is never, and will never, be on Benitez's level. There's deffo better out there than Benitez, but for us, in our position, I don't think there is.
The CL was an absolute fluke. How long had Rafa been there? Look at the semi. Look at the final. Look at the squad. Everyone criticises Pardew for coming in having an impact but then falling off.
Look at the final? That other final Rafa got them to? Or the Europas he won with Valencia and Chelsea? Flukey? I disagree. I criticise Pardew for being a yes man with little ability to manage, as evidenced by the fact he has no job or offer to **** off to China for big money. He deserves **** for that little jig alone.
The other final where they got torn apart. Sorry not torn apart. But a cup run is not necessarily the sign of quality The foundation at Valencia was already built when he arrived. I hardly view winning the Europa league with Chelsea as astounding
I would go as far as saying that Rafa's best achievements in his career have actually been for us. Honestly, I do not think any other manager would have done as good a job as he did under the circumstances. Ashley should be thanking him for keeping his asset value in tact.
