Right it's been a while since I've done a poll so here one is! Not talking the general merits of club v country but a straight choice between these two scenarios: England winning the World Cup. Saints winning the FA Cup in 2019. Go!
Even though I was very clear in my mind as to the answer, I could at least still understand the merits of the previous league v cup debate. I expected a lot of people to disagree with me. But surely this debate is an absolute no-brainer? But hey, maybe the poll will prove me wrong, and a lot more people pick FA Cup than I would have thought. (The FA Cup isn't the pinnacle of club football. So the fact that it's not even a like-for-like option is one of the reasons why I'm completely expecting World Cup to win this by a mile.)
I nearly put league title but thought we'd keep it semi realistic! FA Cup probably a pinnacle of what we could achieve.
Football is all about gloating and laughing at other people who support other teams and their misery when they lose. If England won the World Cup it would all be too united and cringey for me and most importantly not enough fans of other countries about to take the piss out of, if Saints won something (admittedly FA Cup is pretty ****, should've been PL) then I could happily gloat away to all the glory supporting mates I have. Although with it just being the FA Cup they would lol and say why was I that bothered about winning it
Oh I get where you're coming from. But if you're going to ask me whether I'd like £1million or a free Chinese (and I love Chinese), I'm going to choose £1million. Realism or not, league v World Cup makes it a much closer debate in my eyes.
Seen both in my lifetime and the Saints cup win gave me more pleasure for two reasons..A. I was too young to appreciate 1966, and B. Saints were massive underdogs in 1976 and it was just such a thrill to pull it off. The tables have turned a bit and it is harder for England to win the World Cup now than in '66 and it is easier for Saints to win the FA Cup now than '76. At the moment i'll say England for the reason that I don't really remember the first time at first hand. If it had been Saints to win the PL, there would be no contest.
If you ask me this question again in a say a month and England win the WC this time I would probably answer Saints.
I'm not that bothered about either...? No wait, changed my mind, World Cup. I like Southgate too much.
World Cup for me. Football is an international language that unites people. God knows we as a nation could do with getting together and celebrating as a whole for once.
I was 15 when we won the world cup, it was exciting. I was 25 when we won the cup and it rates as one of the best w/e of my life. Would I be prepared to queue up for 48 hours to watch England in a final? No. I arrived at the Dell Saturday Evening for Monday morning sales of cup final tickets in 1976... There were so many by 11.30pm that they sold the tickets on the Sunday morning... England is an interest, Saints are in my veins..
I went for Saints. I know that England winning the WC is the most exciting feeling ever and it is far more important so that was the logical answer. Who says being a football fan is logical.
True that. It will take something huge to heal the divisions in this disunited kingdom - something like England winning the WC. That might actually acheive what I don't think any political leader could. And we could still take the piss out of Scotland and Wales (sorry @Saint Helen and @AberdeenSaint ).
Sorry Saints before England for me. Doesn't mean I won't be jumping up and down like a lunatic when we win the World Cup beating Russia in the final.
