Honestly, I know I'll probably get a lot of grief for this but in my opinion, most football chants are dull and unoriginal and every team has the same ones: "*insert colour here* army!"* "*manager name*'s *colour* army!" "*It's *city/town*, *city/town* FC, they're by far the greatest city/club/town the world has ever seen" "*city/town/team name* till I die, I'm *city/town/team* till I die... etc" "Hello, hello we are the *place* boys etc" "*colours*!" See what I mean? I feel like there's very few decent, memorable and original chants... I like the E-I-E-I-E-I-O chant, and "Woke up this morning feeling fine, I've got promotion on my mind chant." "Play up Pompey" is at least original "Pay up Pompey" however isn't... The Allez Allez Allez chant was good at first, but everyone and their mum seems to chant that nowadays. So what do you all think? Am I right, am I wrong? My God, what have I done!
By the way, how on Earth is E-I-E-I-E-I-O original? It's sung by most FL clubs. 'Woke up this morning feeling fine' was a United chant originally btw
Only the ones who are doing well! But yes, it might not be original but up for it by being catchy and chant-able and memorable.
I did enjoy the "We'll still be last on Match of The Day" chant, when we were beating Sunderland 8-0 a few seasons ago.
I've never really been interested in chants, because although I'm part of a crowd at a game, I never really get into that mob mentality and go along with whatever the sheeple want to sing about. I appreciate that I'm a weirdo in that respect, and the crowd experience is part of the game, but I've never been able to just join in.
This reminds me of the scene in 'Life of Brian', when Brian tells the crowd "You're all individuals", and they respond as one "Yes, we're all individuals", then one man says "I'm not"
It's probably memorable cos it's often associated with good memories like a promotion. I enjoy the piss take chants when your team is ****e as much as anything, 'how **** must you be? We just scored a goal' at the Etihad last year springs to mind. Also enjoyed the various 'we had a shot, we had a shot, we had shooottt' chants during dire matches that would occasionally turn into a 'WE SCORED A GOAAALLLLL' Stuff like that that gets you through the bad times imo.
I like Swing Low, Sweet Chariot (rugby) and the various songs sung during cricket matches...admittedly cricket has gaps long enough to sing a verse or two. I don't mind football chants...especially if someone sings a one-off apt one like 'We'll still be last on MOTD'...don't like offensive ones...though some only seem offensive now, many didn't bother people ten years ago.
Music since the millenium in general is garbage so there you go. People are more interested in cooking than music. Maybe football fans should try to out-do each other by baking cakes during games.
One of my favourite one off ones was after Nicola banned reporters from the ground and the police filming fans standing in the Northam got treated to a chorus of 'Are you working for the Sun?'
Or "We're not minus anymore" and "we've got points, we've got points, we've got points" after beating Gillingham in 2009.
