Corona virus and football

Just been reading a bit around TV deals, and there’s about to be a massive implosion.

Canal Plus in France have exited their TV deal with Ligue One, which for several clubs in that league, it’s basically their only income.

The PL have apparently agreed contingencies with Sky and BT, but the overseas rights, the ones that nobody ever talks about, they are all supposedly close to pulling out.

UK TV deals pay approximately £4billion into the FA which is filtered to the clubs.

The overseas rights, their value? £4.6 billion approx.

People have said for years the Premier League would **** itself, it may be about to happen.

The almighty kick in the Bollocks for us Would be that there’s only one truly debt free club in the Premier League, and that’s ****ing Newcastle (although City, United, Liverpool, Arsenal and Chelsea will be alright).

From my deductions that new stadium of Spurs could send them into an almighty tornado of ****.

Football is built on sand, all of it.

The play off promotion to the PL is billed as the billion pound match. But we all know 99% of that billion will go to the players. It doesn't matter how much comes in the majority of clubs just piss it all away.

Most of the PL clubs put all of their effort into avoiding relegation and keeping their noses in the trough. You mention Newcastle and they're the perfect example of how the TV money has killed their ambition and part of the reason they usually ignore the cup competitions.

The TV money poisons the game and the overseas rights just get African kids buying merchandising from whoever is televised most. The overseas players come here for money, not for the pleasure of living in Birmingham or Bournemouth. The young English players, like Wickham and Grealish get far too much far too soon. Success for them is in the bank balance, not on their mantlepiece.

I've loved football all my life, and travelled countless thousands of miles with Sunderland, but if this whole sorry shambles collapses into the sand I won't be too upset tbh.

The game is rotten but we all pretend it isn't for one reason or another ...

... perhaps this is the time when the pretence comes to a shuddering stop.

When surviving becomes more important than winning, is it even sport anymore?

A national sport should never have been allowed to become ‘business first’.

 

I said on here years ago that the football authorities have sold their soles to Sky and their TV cohorts.
If this current lock down results in clubs going to the wall, however much ive loved football since my first game as a nine year old when I got the Sunderland bug, I see it as all the sports ills finally coming home to roost.
I earnestly hope that it doesn't happen, especially not to my club, but am braced for the worst case scenario.

Are the high paid prima donnas of the premier division for instance willing to take a pay cut if Sky do not cough up?

 

Manchester United started the financial revolution, not Sky.

United spotted the opportunity to bring in money from untapped markets, Kenyon had them raking in hundreds of millions from Asia.

Sky didn’t start it, they just became part of it. It was happening either way.

The fact that clubs then become utterly reliant on the TV revenue doesn’t mean that was its root cause.

 

The Belgian Pro League board has proposed the immediate conclusion of the country's football season.

They actually only had one game left, and Brugge were 15 points clear.

They’ve scrapped the play-off round robin they usually do for Europa League etc though, saying table will stand as it is.

Even if it is our club we will still not disappear we will just be a real club again that has to build with it's own players

 

We don’t want collapse, we want reform.

We don’t want clubs out of business and folk unemployed.

Things like caps and spending limits, balancing of funds. Great.

Clubs gone to the wall? Absolutely not.

 

Sadly only one of those things will ever happen.

 

Like the idea mate but it won't happen as soon as you try you would end up in court as you can't tell people what they can earn.

For all I don’t believe it will ever happen, you’ve only got to look at the DFB and the way the German League is ran.

It absolutely can be done, they don’t have a wage cap, but they have a max v turnover that can be spent.

That's how you get around it. The FA wouldn’t have considered such measures before to keep their members sweet, but if the ice cream has melted, they need to salvage what they can.

The DFB model is sustainable, and there are still profits. We’d still see the FA making more than the DFB as we have a more marketable league.

Its not likely, but there is a way, and it’s already in action.

 

But with a salary cap you're not telling someone how much they can earn, you're telling the clubs how much they are able to pay their squad in total.

If a club can only spend 300k a week on player wages, they're not going to give Messi for example, $250k of that
