you could be right but people seem to want to deny it and push "normality"

personally I think brexit, climate change and covid all add up to rapidly changing global and UK situations.

We are headed for winter and actively seeking to stop measuring covid in as many things as possible. If its "just" a really really bad flu season I think people will try ignore it.

energy shortages, material shortages, worker shortages are not quite so easy to ignore IMO.

I've had less and less to do with him over the years. He's another scouser who lives out here. At first I thought he was just one of my compatriots who shared a healthy distrust of authority, but it became clear that he takes it to absurd extremes.
He's never met a conspiracy he didn't like, and is happy to embrace any explanation - other than the official one - for any situation you care to mention, no matter how ridiculous. Completely paranoid as well, of course.
Having said that, he has another side - he's kind and helpful, and in some ways very principled. He's just incapable of differentiating between fact and fantasy, and in the end that becomes dangerous. He'd never knowingly hurt anyone, but doesn't seem to get that by subscribing to and spreading misinformation he could be doing just that.

I wonder abnout some of these folk if they'd be the first ones on the beaches surrendering the germans in WWII cos they heard lord hawhaw on the radio and he was sure to be more honest than churchill who only promised them blood and tears.

You get 1 go at life, why spend it bothering to think everyone is out to get you etc. It’s like people that are worried the government are listening in on them via Alexa and satellites etc.

so what? Even if they do, I don’t do anything illegal and so far from having anything remotely interesting that they’d get bored looking into anything I search for or talk about at home with Alexa listening in.

Just go and enjoy your life and stop worrying about such small insignificant things.

they'd say something along the lines of

"First they came for the socialists, and I did not speak out—because I was not a socialist.
Then they came for the trade unionists, and I did not speak out— because I was not a trade unionist.
Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out—because I was not a Jew.
Then they came for me—and there was no one left to speak for me."

    Does he smoke weed?

There’s a common trait amongst conspiracy theorists imo, they’d prefer to believe some barmy conspiracy theory about COVID that’d involve the coercion of hundreds of thousands, as opposed to merely accepting it’s a new virus that’s found it’s way into human kind and is a threat to life. As the former means it’s controlled by man, the latter is **** just happening & I think it’s that they struggle with. They subconsciously don’t like the idea of anything being beyond the control of man, so are more comfortable with the blanket of a man made conspiracy.

I was told very matter-of-factly to my face recently that the corona virus was created by Fauci, and had been planned well in advance, so they could sell more vaccines that Fauci was benefitting off.

Therefore they wouldn't get the vaccine because they didn't want Fauci benefitting.

I don't know if my eyes rolled on the outside... But they did on the inside.

Oh, their evidence for this. Apparently Fauci said something about we had to be prepared for any pandemic before the pandemic started. So therefore he must have been responsible for it.

You know.... it makes more sense than Bill Gates tagging everyone on the planet but less sense than well..... just about everything frigging american tv show these days.

Can anyone explain how discovery became the home.of conspiracy nuts.

    Ancient aliens
    Curse of oak island
    Etc etc etc etc

Every second us show seems to divert into some stupid conspiracy or aliens did it explanation.

They love a bit of nazi gold or Aztec gold or any sort of peddled treasure hunt or templars or what have you.

I just think they are long overdue a good culling to thin the herd.

Anyone can look up anything on the internet nowadays and "know something".

Conspiracy nuts just want to feel like they "know something" other people can't just know, or look up. The seductive appeal of conspiracies is feeling superior to others because you know something others don't.

They welcome the ridicule when you don't believe them, because it makes them feel superior. "Hah, Sheeple, cant see the truth".

Have you ever noticed that people who believe one conspiracy seem to believe a lot of conspiraces... It's that sweet seductive "I'm superior to the Sheeple" appeal that they get thinking theyre in the minority in the know. Always know more than the mere peasants who believe the news.

    Thinking the herd?

If they.beleived that they'd wear face masks and self isolate but they dont do that either.

They are like rats in gods own maze. Being studied as the run hither and yon until they drop dead or whatever stupidity kills them most.

There's a fair amount of psychological research showing that an attachment to conspiracy theories is a mental disorder. People with a tendency to jump to conspiratorial conclusions share common traits with those suffering from other, long-established psychoses.
Of course some conspiracies do exist, but sufferers lack either the will or the capacity to separate the plausible ones from the absurd.
Somehow it seems perfectly reasonable to some that all of medical science, all health-care organisations, and every government in the world is conspiring against them (as if all the world's governments could ever co-operate on anything) to some nefarious end or other. They'll accept any hypothesis, no matter how ridiculous - sometimes simultaneously embracing mutually exclusive ones - as long as it isn't the official explanation.
All evidence that contradicts their fantasies is a lie, but they can never produce any evidence of their own.
They're just the same as flat-Earthers, evolution deniers and all the others in the box of crackers.

There was a good episode of The Infinite Monkey Cage on conspiracy theories/theorists. There is clear correlation between belief in conspiracy theories and a) lower intelligence and b) lower levels of education.

Then again, as the scientists keep saying correlation does not equal causation.

I used to think that the ancient alien thing was down to a few lazy archaeologists who got into the field and then decided that digging for 20 years in 50 degree heat was for idiots. It seems to me a far easier means to make a living selling made up some **** to morons on discovery.

However now what I see is people who are historians following suit. there was a six part thing (cannot call it a documentary) on why the nazi's won the war on there recently. they had maybe enough for one show max but then made up the rest with some fairly wild and stupid topics as fillers. It seems to me that now its easier make stuff up as "opinion" than deal in fact and just peddle a line or two. It was completely wild and inaccurate in parts and each episode has one kernel in it filled round with presumptions and very high level rubbish.

Now they like not find a tiny factoid and make an entire series out of it. there was nazi hunters for real but they made i think 2 series out of hunting hitler with the premise he might has escaped berlin, maybe. then they went round all sorts of places showing various nazi crap and made out hitler could have come through. theres a long line of south american folk ready to stand up and say anything so it was ideal.

Same for treasure hunter. Something about the aztecs where the conquistadors saw " mountains of gold" before being forced out and it all then vanished so it must be in "utah"

    or another about confederate gold

and so forth and so on. Japanese gold. nazi gold. anything gold.

I flick though looking for anything decent and never find anything. Its so annoying. I've been reduced to amazon prime for a few older documentaries but they run out fiarly instantly.

Bullshit abhors a vacuum. There's so much space for programming on telly and the web these days that it gets filled up with any old crap someone can be bothered to come up with.
