I'll play devils advocate and say no. There's not a humane way of killing a criminal. In the USA is costs on average 1.26m to put someone to death. Mistakes and flaws in the system will result in a few innocent people being put to death.
Yes, for paedophiles and murderers. I don't get this 'death penalty should only apply for murdering a policeman' argument as though the life of a policeman is worth more than the life of anyone else - it's not. A life is a life, so a life for a life.
Yes, for murder, child molestation, acts of torture or mutilation which permanently disable the victim (blinding, loss of (or use of) limbs or vital organs, tongue removal, coma) but only where there is no doubt in the guilt of the offender. So someone like Michael Ryan in Hungerford if he'd been caught before he shot himself would've been a prime candidate for topping.
I thought the tories had already introduced it. Every year they tighten the vice. * So many people now face the 'heat or eat' dilemma since they came to power. Many die as a result. * Food banks were not a thing before this tory government. We now have over 1m reliant on the generosity of others to live. * Homelessness has always existed, but only since this government was elected as there been a spike in directly related deaths, with no sign of the trend abating. * There are many other examples, but I think the point is made above. So if the tories are quite happy to kill innocent citizens, why should they be so squeamish about killing criminals that deserve it?
How many heads does a terrorist have Saw em off before they commit the crime so what if you get a few wrong ones
Well you'll be unsuprised to learn the bleeding heart liberal answer is a No. There's not 100% chance of there not being a miscarriage of justice. There have been people who were later proved innocent who would now be dead. And if the punishment for taking an innocent life is death penalty then shouldn't this then apply to the excutioner, the judge, the prosecutor and they be punished/executed when an innocent persons life is taken? It doesn't act as a deterrent and in America as said above it costs more to kill a prisoner than life imprisonment https://deathpenaltyinfo.org/policy-issues/costs
Stealing sheep carried the death penalty. The reason the Welsh were branded as sheep shaggers was it was a lesser crime than theft. All a thief had to do when caught thieving was to drop his pants and he'd get done for a misdemeanor instead. Mind you, the penalty for that could be nasty , but not many got caught or our choirs would have been full of sopranos.
Sorta on the same subject .... Friends in the Outer Hebrides told me of someone who was found dead in a field. It was a mystery as his death had been pretty gruesome. His lower abdomen had been ripped out of his body, and conspiracy theorists reckoned it was an alien abduction.... .... until they heard the whole story. Which included the nearby stool! This guy had been standing on the stool shagging a cow. Apparently a cow can create an internal vacuum that does it no harm, but if stick your dick in & complete the seal, something has to give, and the cow has the more resistant constitution. Which is why the guy's dick & lower abdomen were ripped out from the rest of his body. I can only hope for his sake that it was quick. Not an urban myth, btw. I was shown the local newspaper article. It was about 40 years ago.
