For the record only 1 in 5 graduates find themselves in employment where they earn less than someone who went straight into employement. 4 out of 5 earn considerably more. (office of national statistics)

I agree. The vast majority of people I know that went to uni have got much better jobs than then the people ghat didn't go to uni. Uni isn't about getting your dream job either. For many, he experience of uni is worth it even if they don't get the job they hoped for. I think the ones that end up in bar jobs and similar work are the ones that choose to do degrees that are a bit vague. Some degrees are indeed almost worthless, but is more like 5% than 80%.

 

It was Tony Blair's mantra "Education Education Education" that allowed anyone and everyone to obtain a degree - many of which didn't have one eye on future employment. In fact it was education for education's sake. This led to graduates stacking shelves in Tescos, unfortunately.

When my kids went to Uni I tried to encourage them to choose something that not only suited them but also would lead naturally into employment. For once they took my advice and both have landed excellent jobs. Having said that, there's still a lot to be said for traditional apprenticeships in my book and it's good to see the current Government has increased those.

theres a tsunami of graduates with history and english degrees every summer that, upon graduating, think, "now what?". can you blame the students for believing the prospectuses that greatly exaggerate the worth of these degrees? its only now that i've narrowed down my career choice (just finished first year) that i've realised its is a no go despite going to a 'good' university.

you're right, blair must take a lot of the blame for this. its completely unaffordable to be educating 50% of kids at taxpayers expense, so they triple the fees. the next lot out who have chosen the right degrees and earn good money will be paying back triple the headline figure of roughly £15,000 per year of university (including living expenses) due to the new repayment mechanism.

They probably would have even if they didn't obtain a degree. A degree shows that you have certain qualities relating to study, self organisation etc etc. But there are far cheaper ways of establishing that than sending someone to study Latin or some of the subjects listed below for three years:

I dont think you understand what i was saying. 80% of all degrees ends up worthless if there are not enough jobs available. Apprenticeships are much more worth while for youngsters today than any of the ones mentioned in PGF's post. You can get a degree in anything, i think i will apply and study for a BA in why young boys think women don't fart and only get the truth when they marry.

 

Disagree. You can do apprentiships and still end up with no job at the end. Also with those degrees listed, a lot of those open paths for those wanting to choose a research path in their respective fields.

Also to say i.e. that a archeology degree is worthless is just plain daft. Now a degree like Film and Television studies on the other hand is a waste of time IMO.

 

Im not saying any degree is worthless but the amount of youngsters who are studying for Any degree have more chance getting a job just walking the streets than expecting to get a job on the subject they have worked hard for for three years. the vast majority don't stand a chance of a job. there are too many qualified to satisfy them all and only the luck few get the chance....
