So now we're going to be in a position where we have directors who are not the manager and chief scout all agreeing with one another. What do the individual positions do? What is a director of football and what are their roles? What is a sporting director and what are their roles? Are there any differences? I honestly have no idea.
The two roles are one and the same. Fundamentally it's about recruitment of players, but unlike 'just' a scout it's done with a vision in mind of how the first team should play and therefore bringing in processes for youth development, reserves and first team additions. It's about creating an identity of the club and it would also then come into play when hiring a manager. So Overmars would come in, say, and have a belief of a style of play that is modern and can evolve - whether that would be a gegenpress or a rapid counter or a possession based game, whatever. Then they'd work with the manager on the gaps in the squad and find the right players who'd be put into a transfer committee for discussion and approval. How I see it at Newcastle is we'd have to start with a counter attacking higher press. It would suit our players to work hard and win the ball back 20 yards further forward than we currently defend, allowing for faster counters. There's no way we can suddenly become a possession-based team overnight. But the archaic sitting deep isn't working. The Director would then need to quickly work out how to enforce that style of play in the first team, whilst working on the newer ideas and the vision with the u23's and youth teams. Something like that.
Head Coach - but that's what Ten Hag does (and doesn't tend to be what Fonseca does). It's a kind of two way thing - DoF ultimately works with the head coach to define a desired identity. That's why appointing Rangnick/Favre, Overmars/Ten Hag or Campos/Jardim would be a very sensible thing to do.
