Mix of boasting/ well chuffed with myself/ encouragement to others in a ‘if I can do it...’ kind of way.

I have a annual check up including blood test. This year my doc couldn’t make it because he’d fallen off his bike and fractured his hip.....but he reviewed the blood test and my reported blood pressure and weight info and told me he didn’t need to see me anyway:
Blood pressure - normal for age (I’d like it lower, but....)
    Cholesterol - optimal levels
HBA1c (diabetes) - in zero risk zone
Creatinine/eGFR (kidney function - key one for me as I carelessly mislaid a kidney a few years ago, and the reason I have the check up) well in normal range

Diet and exercise, and to be honest I think I’m overdoing the exercise. I don’t count calories, just eat good stuff, avoid salt/processed foods and hardly any bread.

If I can do it .........

Well done to to you, sb.
I've recently had test done on my kidneys.
They found a complex cyst but its benign for now.
My mother had a kidney removed, then they found cancer in the other and she passed away from it so l'm very aware of keeping an eye on them.

Do you feel out of breath easily with only one kidney?

No, at least I don’t think so. I stopped smoking about 12 years ago, got an instant improvement in lungs at that stage. I lost the kidney because of physical damage from an operation to remove a very large stone rather than disease, but kidneys are very delicate so I’m keen to look after the other one. Apparently, if in decent nick, one kidney is more than enough. I don’t drink spirits anymore, but beer and wine are fine, I’m told.

nice work - bread is really one that gets me, just love a fresh tiger loaf!
I gave up bread for a year before I got married and lost loads of weight, I did run a lot as well but convinced the bread was key factor.
8yrs on from being married and every now and then I do a month or so without bread but the wife will then get a fresh loaf and I can’t resist- I reckon she prefers me with a bit of timber on me.:)

Fair play SB that’s a cracking report. Self control and application can make a huge difference.
I’m with you on the processed foods, salt and bread (highly overrated and a throwback to wartime in my opinion). Keep up the good work.
Nothing better than a dinner full of fresh unadulterated (un-processed, over sweetened/salted) food, and those fresh herbs from the garden are like a sprinkle of taste heaven.

I do agree on the alcohol Staines, when I do go alcohol free the morning ‘go-factor’ is definitely higher. That said a relaxing beer in the evening is so much better than a couple of slices of bread :emoticon-0100-smile (I think that’s a reasonable argument). Have been taking two-day rest periods and quite enjoying it.

I’ve just realised Aussie that you have a real bastard set of ailments, and I know you have suffered with a bunch of stuff in the past too, none of which can be blamed on lifestyle, and which are particularly tough in your line of work.

‘Look after yourself’ is hardly adequate or helpful. I hope you are getting all the help and support you need to enjoy your life.

Thought I’d bump this for the new lockdown. Looks like it’ll be some time without the gym with lockdown extended here until at least Dec 6th and expect they won’t re-open gyms at home this side of Christmas to ensure people can still get to the garden centre. ****s. Anyway...

It is a very pleasant place to walk though. 40000 steps or so so far for this weekend.

    Get yourself fit with Bez!

Why Bez wants people to 'get buzzin' in lockdown'

Joe Wicks inspired the nation to get moving during the first lockdown, but there's a new character on the fitness scene.

Bez, formerly of the Happy Mondays, is on a quest to get in shape and wants people to join his workouts on YouTube.

Well, having droned on and boasted about my old mans fitness regime, healthy eating, lifestyle etc etc, turns out it only gets you so far. Noticed blood pressure creeping up recently to about 145/80, and thought I should have a chat with my kidney consultant. He’s put me on a low dose blood pressure medication (losartan for those interested) with the comment ‘you have done everything possible to manage this yourself and now need a helping hand. It’s inevitable, just surprised it’s taken this long mate. It’s to do with what the kidneys are evolved to do, managing salt and water levels’.

As Strolls has mentioned high blood pressure is the silent killer, no symptoms, so get it checked regularly. Bang goes my record of avoiding medication but have to say I’m slightly relieved as I was at my wits end as to what else I could do to manage it myself. Just off to fill the prescription.

I had to change my BP medication, was getting terrible pain in my gut and it turns out Lisinopril can cause inflammation in that area. GP has moved me onto a new med, and all seems ok.

How much is a prescription for you down there these days?

My doc said the one I’m getting had less side effects than placebo in trials, so I’m hoping that works for me. Prescription charge is £9.15 for the few of us who have to pay it.

Good to hear you’ve now got it under control.

My kidney specialist told me many people in our age group have suffered blood pressure for many years without knowing it and or doing anything about it.

He mentioned that high BP untreated, can really mess people up from within.
Loss of eyesight / damage, is just one issue.

He gave me a 5 litre bottle and said, record how many pees in 24 hours and go back see him.
    I managed 24 in 24 hours.
Fluid in the kidneys was diagnosed, so he put me on 300mg tablet with a duratic in it to drain the kidneys. That was a few years back and since that, l’m now down to 150mg a day. I really feel l don’t need it but stay with it until the doc says otherwise.

As l get older, l’m listening to my body more and more and get things checked out ASAP
I eat better, l drink a lot less and certainly not as much as l may joke about at times.

Luckily for me, after my recent issue with the kidney cyst, they can keep tabs of things before they turn nasty.

The monthly blood test for the arthritis steroid needle l’m on keeps check on all my levels, with is a good thing.

l’ve known a number of people my age who stick their heads in the sand, until they are delivered bad news of cancer or alike, when it too late.

l’m not going to be one of them.

I gave an involuntarily large DNA sample to the streets of Leamington Spa today as I tripped over a tree root (sue the council) while out running, leaving a significant amount of skin from left knee and both palms in the pavement, which generously gave me some gravel in return. Stings.

Of course, as a 61 year old my instant thought was ‘well that’s it, some neuro-degenerative disorder has kicked in and I won’t be able to make it to the shops without assistance in a few weeks’ until I reflected on it. I run three times a week on average, sometimes outside sometimes on a treadmill. This is the first tumble I’ve had in a couple of years of doing this. It’s a miracle that it hasn’t happened before given the state of the pavements. And between the ages of 5 and 15 I was used to having very little skin, but a lot of scabs on my knees virtually permanently.

Age can make us over dramatise and overthink things. As my son said “you’ve fallen over, you haven’t “had a fall’”. Important distinction.

I’ll be running again on Saturday.

Can't be doing with running, but a fast walk at circa 6km/h is enough to get the blood pumping on a treadmill.... plus it puts less strain on the foot that had the stress fracture recently.....

Always important to get that distinction between falling over and having a fall.... hopefully the latter is many years off.....

Think I've discovered a new keep fit regime over the weekend, although it won't be for most of you. Whilst attending a festival, did over 10 miles a day walking back and forth from tent to arenas, even putting in a bit of weightlifting by carrying my contrand beer that I smuggled into the arena.

Staggeringly though were the statistics from my fitness app whilst involved in several mosh pits. 4500 steps during Utah Saints set, 4500 during 808 State, and nearly 7000 steps during Snapped Ankles which was equivalent to a 3 mile run apparently, and a lot more fun especially when you're pished <laugh> think I'm going to start running MoshFit classes at the local sports centre!
