Some good food inside the venue, lots of organic stuff....irn bru pulled pork with cajun fries last night a treat
Last day of employment early afternoon celebration snack: Brunello di Montalcino accompanied by a mature Gorgonzola with Peters Yard sourdough crackers. Followed by a Cuban Montecristo cigar. Dinner will be a dry aged roast rib of beef. As a pensioner now, all subsequent meals will be spam, sunblest white sliced and Frosty Jack’s cider (£3.90 for 2.5 litres).
So, with the house to myself for a few days I decided to cook something that Emma wouldn't want to try. Grilled lime and garlic marinated salmon with sticky, coconut Jasmine rice. Topped with a mango, avocado, sweet red pepper, red onion and lime juice salsa. Plus lime wedges and a beer! Just one thing let me down unfortunately...... bloody rice was too mushy rather than sticky!
Nice. Need to get back into the cooking bug, but just no time - either working late or working away these days....need a new job I think!
Had the pleasure of working down Newcastle way this week (near Blaydon to be precise, so a bit out of the city centre). Stayed at the Holiday Inn (upmarket for me) by the Metro Centre, and following a tip walked across the street to The Skiff Inn. Advertised as British meets Italian home cooking, thought we'd give it a try. An extensive menu full of mouthwatering food, but I plumped for an old favourite - Giant Yorkshire Pudding with Cumberland sausage, mash, veg and onion gravy. Having seen the portions on other diners plates (place was heaving on a Thursday night) I was wondering what would turn up....ended up with a yorkie the size of a childs head! Enormous plate of food (couldn't finish all of mine), and really well cooked. Yorkie was just right, light and fluffy but crisp on the outside, veg cooked to perfection - still a bit of crunch on the carrot and broccoli and mash creamed really well...and the onion gravy - wow! Value for money? Two of us, both with the yorkies, and five pints of Morretti each - £65. Su-****ing-perb!
I paid £28.65 for five pints and no food in the Defectors Weld pre match today. And I had to wait an age to get served. ****ing robbery. Company was good though.
That's the problem with football. It used to be Okay when I had a season ticket in the family stand. £633 for me and my two daughters. It worked out at £9.17 a game. Now they are nineteen and twenty it's well over a grand. They're both at Uni or working so are unable to go. So now I have to pay £36 to go to a match plus £3.50 booking fee, so effectively £40. Plus drinks, plus food, plus train fare, it's over a hundred quid to go to one home game.
Mexican meal for 6 last night. Nibbles - Padron pepper poppers. Padron peppers filled with cream cheese, cheddar, bacon, onion powder, garlic powder and coriander. Main - Carne asada fries. Home made fries cooked in garlic, paprika and sea salt. Covered with bavette steak marinaded in orange juice, lime juice, coriander, garlic, chili powder, cumin, oregano and ancho chilli's. Served with baby carrots coated with maple syrup and cinnamon. And elotes (mexican streetcorn). Grilled Corn on the cob drizzled with a lime, ancho chilli, garlic, parmesan and coriander butter. All topped with feta, sour cream and guacamole. Dessert - Fresa con crema. Strawberries covered in a whipped cream of evaporated milk, condensed milk, sour cream and vanilla essence and sprinkled with lime zest. Very happy with the results, all came out great with fantastic taste throughout. Still getting used to the single oven in the new house though, made it difficult to get it all done together. May rethink my ambitions a little next time
Sundays nosh - ( A Half-Baked Harvest recipe). Creamy, Indian spiced butternut squash butter chicken. With greek yogurt, garam masala, cumin, paprika, turmeric, cayenne pepper, onion, garlic and tomato. Served with garlic naans and topped with coriander. A peppery kick but creamy and delicious!
Spent an afternoon/evening/night with some friends at the Crown & Sceptre in Great Titchfield Street yesterday. Camden Pale Ale £7.05 a pint, Guiness only slightly more reasonable at £6.30. Towards the end of the night - with just two of us left - I asked my companion what he wanted, and he asked for an Armagnac. 'Armagnac?' I said in a slightly incredulous tone, and he confirmed, so off I went to the bar, returning with a pint of Guiness for me and a large Courvoisier for him (they didn't have Armagnac). He took a sniff and said, 'What's that?' 'It's Cognac', I said, 'they didn't have Armagnac'. 'Oh, did I say Armagnac, I meant Amaretto'. Christ knows how much that cost.
****ing hell…..the most middle class thing to take place since Pret decided to have a sit in at the local Waitrose…..of course SB will have seen it. He’s probably part of organising the ****ing thing
Can guarantee the Wimbledon one will be taking place in Canizaro Park. Expect the entrees to start at £30 !
Cooked a special Xmas eve dinner for 8 members of the family. Braised oxtail and butterbeans in red wine with celery, onion, tomatoes, Scotch bonnet chilli, garlic, thyme, cayenne pepper and Worcester sauce. Served with flat-leaf parsley and white rice. My god it came out well. It was SO tasty and the meat just flaked off the bone. The chilli gave it just an ideal amount of heat too. Would heartily recommend, if anyone wanted to try let me know and will put up the recipe.
Sorry Hoop, missed this. Yeah, well aware. Good nosh and the excellent Sophie Ellis Bextor last summer.
That's the one Just not sure why it's not showing up on the original post. Having said that, I'm having a few problems posting in this site. When I type my posts, for some reason huge spaces keep appearing between sentences. It's a right pain in the 'arris.
