I watched The XYY Man this weekend, finished tonight. Good fun, I now have Strangers and Bulman to follow.
Hope nobody minds me renaming this thread so all entertainment related massages can be posted here... Russell T Davies (first producer of the 2005 relaunch of Doctor Who) has said he thinks only gay actors should play gay characters. He thinks it's more 'authentic' somehow. OK, let's put the implied slur on the acting ability of all straight actors to one side. Imagine... Just imagine... The Woke furore there would be if a TV producer came out (pardon the pun) and said only straight actors should play straight characters. There would be calls for that producer to be sacked and never work again. I don't mind Mr T Davies having his opinion. But surely would he not bow to the next logical step from his comment? If only gay actors can play gay characters, then only straight actors can play straight characters. It would be more authentic somehow.
What a silly idea of Davies. The whole art of acting is that you pretend to be somebody else. I would like to see more actors with regional accents used, since there is a recent trend of actors to mumble when they are struggling with an accent. A good example is the Norwegian actor who played Gabriel Oak inthe recent Far From the Madding Crowd. The result was a portrayal of Oak as the strong silent type, whereas Hardy's Oak is a likeable sociable man.
It makes sense if they have to perform the 'act'. Although everybody has their price. I can feel a new thread coming on!!!!!
Quite a few homosexual actors made a living when homosexuality was illegal. Good actors who, by current logic should have been unemployable. Knowing that Gorden Kaye was a homosexual playing rampant womaniser Renee Artois and that Guy Siner was a straight man playing a homosexual German officer added to the fun in 'Allo 'Allo.
A few macho American actors were gay. There aren't very many gay roles, so if you're going to cast actors according to sexuality a lot of gay actors will be out of work. In the original Far from the Madding Crowd Alan Bates was an excellent Gabriel Oak, and he was gay.
Selleck is married with children so I doubt that's correct. The list is quite extensive: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:Gay_actors
I've been on Netflix a lot lately. A mate of mine recommended 'The Last Kingdom' which was great, and he then followed up with 'The Queen's Gambit' which was the best thing I've seen on TV in years. Binge watched it twice in the last two months. I'm currently watching a documentary about removing the Mafia in New York in the eighties, and plodding along with The Crown, which started well but in the third season is beginning to drag.
I've spoken to PP, he calls this forum Pseuds Corner and said he will give me £500 if he ever posts on it again.
