https://metro.co.uk/2021/03/11/fines-for-train-fare-dodgers-set-to-double-14229297/ Fines for dodging train fares could be doubled under new plans to crack down on the issue in England and Wales. The Government says the penalty fares of £20 are ‘no longer fulfilling their deterrent function’ and is planning a rethink. The Department for Transport (DfT) said its preference is to bring the fines ‘more closely into line’ with Transport for London’s scheme, which is an £80 penalty reduced to £40 if paid within 21 days. Before the coronavirus crisis, around £240 million a year was being lost through fare evasion across Britain, according to industry estimates. Got out of the station yesterday morning to watch a person of ethnicity casually push through the double barriers, member of staff also of ethnicity said and did nothing. This morning two honkies (yes, I was just as shocked) did the same thing at the same gate, no member of staff of any description in attendance. The two males stood outside station entrance, dropped can of Red Bull in the bin (at least they didn't litter) lit up a fag each and proceeded to laugh and chat in what I assume is some sort of Eastern European language. I have to cough up £2500 a year to travel into central London for work but it is extremely rare to see transport Police other than when there is a terror alert and they are all over the mainline stations armed to the teeth or during lockdown when they outnumber the passengers. Not in the same league as discussions on other threads about abducted women but this sort of petty crime is something the authorities have no desire to prevent. In order to double a fine you have to catch the fare evader, if you let them stroll through the ticket barriers unchallenged then the level of fine is irrelevant.
Not sure if it still happens, metro fare dodgers used to be named and shamed on a rogues gallery a while back.
Last summer I cycled to Edinburgh 3 times and got the train back for free. Sometimes I get the train to work and have never had to pay as the station at my home and my work don't have gates so the secret is to find out where the conductor is then get as far away from them as possible.
Yet people who wear a mask and get a jab are scumbags? Doubt you will be casting the first stone any day soon.
I follow him on Twitter but I think he's muted me because he never engages with me in any conversations. He's turned against the SNP but is still a Green fan so he's still a spastic.
Hahaha I can't imagine why he never engages with you in any conversations. I can only imagine the kind of conversations you try to start with him.
I never bought tickets in France/Monaco, was only caught a few times in about 5 odd years. Well worth it.
It would be if I was a menial worker on little more than minimum wage. Apparently saying how much you do earn on here is considered bad taste. No matter how much anyone earns you should do your duty as a citizen and pay your way. Pay your taxes (all of it, not pretending your McDonalds was a business lunch), pay your rates, pay your fares and abide by the law.
My Great Aunt, used to buy a second class ticket and sit in first. If questioned, she would say, "Do I look like the sort of person, that would sit in second class?" She was an odd duck.
My Mum once said she would sit in one those old fashioned six berth carriages (like the ones on the train to Hogwarts) and pretend to be a mong with full-on dribble if anyone else tried to sit there. I never knew if she was joking.
Didn’t pay full fare on the Tube once throughout the 80s. Got a bit harder after that, but I considered it my right as a Londoner to have mugs like @GroveRanger do the paying for all of us.
