Anybody watched the FIFA Uncovered documentary on Netflix? I found it an amazing investigation and very interestingly told. Corruption, kickbacks, distribution of funds to FIFA officials rather than football federations, heads of state manipulation and bribe-taking in the highest corridors of the game - and this was going on for decades! I can't work out why the US Dept of Justice first went after FIFA individuals only to later pay FIFA $200m, as they were the victims of this! A brilliant documentary.
Can I refer you all to this post: https://www.not606.com/threads/the-2022-world-cup-discussion-thread.403620/
That thread is labelled as a matchday thread, so I didn’t see the first post on it or realise that you introduced the documentary. I also see that you totally changed the focus of it in the next post! Apologies - I didn’t intend to copy this thread!
No problem. I am getting at the others for not reading things properly. It is an excellent documentary though. I had always blamed Blatter for the whole Qatar debacle but it was clear he was dead against it and the Qataris bypassed him and sorted it through high level government to government persuasion and ‘bribery’. Bodes well for us - expect some major arms orders coming in to UK from Saudi and PL to drop the market value checks for sponsorship deals.
FIFA are allowing Qatar to impose islamic conditions on a tournament that claims to promote openess, friendliness and respect. Qatar openly discriminating against the LGBT community and imposing islamic law on travelling fans. It should be a condition on applying that religious laws do not apply to the tournament. Backward country and backward people. Money cannot buy class and dignity.
They probably look at us and say the same thing. They probably see people binge drinking, falling in ditches and missing football matches as evidence of societies that have lost their way. There is nothing classy or dignified about that.
FIFA aren't allowing it, Qatar are imposing their cultural standards as is their right as a sovereign state. All this was predicted back when they were awarded the tournament. But the right pockets were lined to grant it (I suspect) and here we are. You can't ask a country to change their laws for a tournament, you have to adapt your event to the laws in existence in the country. You'd expect people visiting the UK to abide by UK law so people visiting Qatar have to abide by theirs. I'd hesitate in calling them a backwards country and people as well. It's a different culture far removed from where ours is now. We can only show them how equality works in our culture while we are out there and see if it sparks a change.
Not at all. I see that Infantino has trawled the sewer this morning. "I am every migrant worker." On his £2 million per year sslary.
he even said he was gay. Won’t they throw him out for that? he’s rattled and is struggling to justify a tournament hardly anyone in the world outside of Qatar and FIFA wanted. Still. the stench of back room deals permeates this tournament. personally I’m not too fussed about international football. Oh and get your money on Qatar to win the opening game and the Ecuadoreans going home a lot richer in 3 weeks..
Qatar will get through the group where potentially they could face England. If we make it through and face them, we should pose with a rainbow flag blazoned with "respect" and "no to discrimination and homophobia" to stick it to FIFA.
