Manchester By The Sea Oscar nominated, Best Actor Award, tragic story ... Dross, boring, what do the critics see in this?
Get you. You like being judgemental and sarcastic about other's opinions, as well as films, Quill! ****'s trick on this thread. Nòt my kind of film; constant flashbacks, endless bickering, a dull, very predictable ending. Best male actor? I think they might have got the wrong envelope ...
Wouldn't disagree too much, although not Oscar gripping, I thought it lacked pace throughout, Certainly a heartrending central storyline, just lacking any real pace or twists to keep us focused for over 2hrs. Glad you enjoyed it; each to their own ...
Saw Fences the other day. Still not sure what I thought of it. It was essentially a stage play filmed. Almost all of the 'action' takes place in the back yard or house. So many long speeches by Denzel Washington's character. Must have been hard work remembering those lines. The main character was very dislikable. None of the characters bar possibly Bono were at all likeable. I felt the character played by Bubba off forrest Gump was a typical overacted stage version of mental illness for light relief. The storyline was very slow and not particularly interesting. I guess in conclusion it was slow, uneventful, overacted and full of unendearing characters. Typical awards season fare I guess.
All this 'not worthy of Oscar nomination' talk ignores the fact that Titanic has the most wins ever* *I think. I didn't check at all.
Yep, I thoroughly enjoyed that; I recommended it as I found the story and performances absorbing and uplifting - despite a profound lack of explosions * * notice how I hinted at humor there.
Ben-Hur, Titanic and Return of the King have the joint most, with 11. Titanic does have the joint most nominations too at 14, with All About Eve and La La Land. Return of the King won every award it was nominated for. I only knew the first line, the rest I had to check. Return winning all 11 it was nominated for is actually an amazing achievement.
Who are you paraphrasing? I personally think the Oscars are a crock of ****e, so being nominated means nothing to me about how watchable the film will be; this is more than adequately supported by this years offering, IMHO. Manchester By The Sea was nominated and strongly fancied, by some, and that is fine by me as it just supports my view that the Oscars are not a great reflection of watch-ability. What was peculiar, for us, at least, was that the collective Oscar Awards system though Casey Afflick was the stand-out leading actor performance of the season; strange decision - are they all PL referees or Sky Pundits?
And the winner was ..... Moonlight ... ... but how? It is barely good, it has an uneventful story with some strong, but uneventful characters. How did this win? La La Land, next.
La La Land is a film of two halves. The first half is a musical rising to Poppinsesque dance routines; the second half is a romantic drama with music and song in it. Put the two together and you have a tuneful **** sandwich. 5 years later seemed to take forever with its flight-of-fancy, but it really does touch down in La La Land. The End
