Did anyone see the ITV 4 program last night called "Mavericks"?

What a bloody good program that was. It is one of three and last night was about maverick footballers from the 70's. Best, Marsh, Osgood, Hudson, Bowles, Curry, Worthington, they are all on it. It talks about how and why they never really go a proper chance at international level. Shocking that the likes of Peter Osgood only got 4 England Caps, Alan Hudson only 2 caps, Stan Bowles 5, Rodney Marsh 9, Frank Worthington 9.

The next program is on the 80's and then a 90's to date episode.

Of course, a certain Matthew Le Tissier appears on one of the next episodes.

Watching the program showed that we had some incredibly talented players and didn't use them well. It is true to say they were mostly true mavericks with their off the field antics with booze and women, however we have wasted some seriously good talent over the years. (No Robin Friday though)

Near the end of the program, Glen Hoddle says something quite true. He said, "If George Best had been English, he probably wouldn't have been the first name on the team sheet." It seems that the English disease has deep roots.

I would highly recommend this for any old timers wanting a trip down memory lane and for any youngsters who think that todays players are far more skillful. Great viewing.

Anyone with any fond memories. I always loved Frankie Worthington's season with Saints, just for his keepy ups in the warm-up.

I'm seriously annoyed at myself for missing it - will see if I can get it on catch up!

So true of our players over the years - I remember these guys have amazing skills and yet the establishment wouldn't accept to put them in the team. Can you imagine if someone like Alan Hudson had been Italian or Spanish? We'd have been drooling over his skills in the international games ...... Shame!!

Will watch the next ones, definitely! Are they on weekly?

Cheers for the head up FLT, I'll have to set Thursday's repeat to record. Shame that Robin Friday doesn't feature however, 'The Greatest Footballer You Never Saw' is one of my favourite ever football books.

They have done/are doing a movie about him too. I need to read that book first though.

I used to joke to my family that I'd write a book titled that.

Surely not the same Glenn Hoddle that couldn't find a place for Matty in his World Cup squad?

Should be a very good programme. I'll look out for it on ITV's dreadful Player. The other thing to bear in mind is that all these silky skilled footballers played on appalling pitches compared to today, hence the football reflected it and only the super skilled were still able to look superb.

I'll always remember Frank Worthington for that reverse pass that led to Danny Wallace's overhead. It was perfection in passing.

It was perfection from the moment Mark Wright tackled Ian Rush on the edge of our box ....

Ps. You should see the pitches!!!

That's true. I also still don't quite know how Mark Wright ran all the way up the other end to be on the end of the cross from Mark Dennis to head back to Wallace. He must have had winged heels.
