Frank Bough: Former Grandstand presenter dies aged 87
Frank Bough was one of the best-known television personalities of the 1970s and 80s.

Former Grandstand presenter Frank Bough has died aged 87.

A family friend told the BBC the ex-television host died in a care home on Wednesday.

The corporation has paid tribute to him.

A BBC spokesperson said: "Frank excelled as a live presenter with the BBC for many years and we are very sorry to hear of his passing.

"We send our condolences to his family and friends."

Bough was one of the best-known television personalities of the 1970s and 80s.

He was part of the launch of the BBC's Breakfast TV show in 1983.

But his career with the corporation ended in 1988, when he was sacked after a scandal.

I have a memory of watching him on telly back in the 1970s when another presenter asked Frank who he wanted to win between us and some other team. I can’t remember what he said about how he became a MLF but he did say he was and that’s why he wanted us to win.
    RIP Frank. MLF4EVA!!

Might be because he lived up In the north East when he was a presenter on BBC, not that I know though

Possibly. I’ve got a very vague memory it was because he visited family in the NE but yours is probably the better reason!

RIP Frank. Good memories from my youth . He would be doing the voice over the clunking teleprinpter , and always seemed to find something good or consoling say about us after another grim Saturday afternoon!

The teleprinter. That takes me right back to the mid 1970s visiting my cousins in Ryhope waiting for the scores to come in then afterwards watching Basil Brush and Doctor Who. Life was so much simpler then.

On a side point, It's a real shame he was sacked for what he did, yet Jimmy Savile did so much worse and was protected and coveredup after his death.

Frank Bough was part of my childhood on Grandstand as a kid on Saturday afternoons. How much better and simpler things were back then in the late 70's and the 80's . Grandstand with Frank Bough, then Des Lyneham on the BBC, World of Sport with Dickie Davies on ITV... The Wrestling, with Kent Walton commentating before the final scores came in... Saint and Greavsie, Brian Clough on World Cup pundit panels...
RIP Frank. Thanks for the childhood memories
