Hey all. I’m not sure if any of you have a gaming laptop but I want to get one for my daughter for Christmas but it can’t be silly expensive.

looking fir something around the £500 mark which will be decent for gaming and also allow her to do her work fir school!

I’m good at programming computers (it’s ,y job ffs) but I have no idea about anything when it comes to buying them any more!!

for 500 quid you might get a decent used gaming machine but for any of the new games and good graphics you need to look at double that at least i'm afraid...'alienware' do top spec machines but very deep pockets required.

It doesn’t need to be massive spec. She’s 11. She’s not into Cod or fort nite or any of that stuff yet. Just likes sims type games but I want a little scope. Something decent which won’t run out in no time

ok, so 'around 500' fits this one, just...good cpu, good amount of RAM, good graphics (especially for a laptop)...obviously it is used and that means marks, so take a good look at it but it is a decent enough machine for what she will need, probably even a little high spec to be honest so should serve her a while.

OK, his response is below, the pricing is in US dollars...

"Specification wise I’d probably find some computers that have the following: Processor: intel core i5-11300H or AMD Ryzen 5 5600H RAM: 8-16GB DDR4 SSD: 512GB Graphics card: GTX 1650 or RTX 3050 (the 3050 is much better) We’ve been selling those between $700-$850. Lenovo or HP have been the brands I’ve seen, I’d lean more toward the Lenovo’s as they haven’t been crippled by the chip shortage as much"

I think you maybe need to make the distinction between a "gaming laptop" or a laptop she can play games on.

My son (well me really) built his Gaming PC at Xmas and it came in at around £1200 but £500 of that was spent on the GPU (he's into Fortnite/FIFA etc so needs good graphics)

If it's just a laptop/PC that will play some low end games and be useful for schoolwork then £500 should be a reasonable budget

Wouldn't touch them with a bargepole - bought a Surface Pro from there a few years back, it was sold as new but when I turned it on someone else was logged into it! After a huge amount of hassle I had to drive to the warehouse in Huddersfield and demand my money back

Fair enough. I've had loads of stuff from there for work and never had any issues.

One experience was enough for me, but aye am sure it's the exception rather than the norm. I DO get the impression that a lot of the hear they sell a "new" is returned stock

On topic I have an old imac, I am probably going to update it with a new one. Transferring data files from one machine is not a problem. But what about the programmes, excel etc how can I transfer them?

I used to buy from there for work never had any bother sounds like topcat has maybe been unlucky.

I got an new msi from them about 6 weeks ago with a similar spec as Ozzymac's son suggests for £530.

If you didn’t grasp from the OP, I’m not one for the semantics of “gaming laptop” vs “laptop to play games”!! I thought they were one and the same!!, my bad

Hi Marcus, I use The Computer Shop in Chester-le-street. The lads in there are great. You can tell them exactly what you want, what games you want to play, your budget etc and they'll build a custom PC/laptop. They have a lot in stock too that they'll adapt for you if needed. My 2 lads have both had gaming PCs from them and they're over the moon. They even threw in some wifi adapters for free. Definitely worth having a word with them.

Exactly, and they struggled through lockdown and still managed to help so many people with decent laptops and PCs for working and studying from home. They're really spot on and helped me a lot cause I'm not the most techy person.
