To be fair, caretaker managers are always promoted from within the club so really not much of a surprise bar the lack of experience Ben Hayes has. It'll get interesting when we start looking for another new manager. We can almost adveritse it as an employment with maximum six months duration, as nobody lasts longer any more. The additional problem for a new manager will be having to work with our unbalanced squad, and with no guarantees of new players worthy of the name in january. And all the chatter about getting along to the Brighton game to show a possible new owner the potential at the club has vanished with the dawn - why would someone selling the club bother to sack a manager and pay compensation if he was about to walk away (unless Garner had a contract that stipulated that he could be sacked for free in december if we lost to Cheltenham?)
The times they are a' changing. I so wanted to believe in Thomas Sandgaard that I made myself look a fool defending his ways. Sadly he has shown that he cannot lead the Club to better times, only to long years of decline. I've lost my faith in him, and in my own judgment. I'm not going to have a go at any Charlton fan who wants to protest. Dodger and people who share his views are right it seems, and I was wrong to oppose and even ridicule them. I can only hope now that a rescue of some kind is coming.
It is fitting that Ben Garner has been sacked. Unless Charlton win away at Morecambe in our next L1 game, the team will have fewer points than it did under Nigel Adkins at the same point last season. We are one poor result away from our worst season (so far) since 1926.
IF we were to lose our next 3 league games, or at least not win any, then I'd get the jitters. Otherwise, I think we'll be safe.
The way we're playing now would suggest that Garner was part of the problem. Obviously not the whole problem!
He got taken in by Sandaard's patter (I know what that feels like), then spat his dummy out when he didn't get everything he'd been 'promised'. Tough titty I say. Managers always get led a dance by owners. You knuckle down and get on with it in my book.
Garner wasn't so surprised though. He knew how Jacko got sacked by phone the day after he and Tommy had been discussing the following season.
Ben Garner knew Johnnie Jackson had been sacked over the phone? That makes me much more angry about JJ's treatment by Sandagaard than Garner's dismissal. I know TS never wanted to give Jackson the job on a permanent basis in the first place. But that's no excuse for sacking him by telephone. Johnnie Jackson was a great servant to Charlton Athletic for years. Yes, Sandgaard's expensive lawyers saw off ESI. But the guy himself has failed to bring better times to the Club. And Garner has never done anything for CAFC except whinge. Jackson is 100 times more of a Charlton man (and indeed a man generally) than either one of them is.
