Worth pointing out that Lee Bowyer was a top class midfield player in his day. He will know what’s required in that position, and is a better judge than any fan.
Bow said they needed to clear some space in the squad to bring in a couple of players.... can't help feeling that Lapslie, Oshi & Oz may be those players being cleared out.... of the loans, little Smyth & Levitt look like the changes there.
You can't just release a footballer these days, the termination costs would still count towards the salary cap.
Sorry that George is off on a free transfer but those are the breaks in 2020 with a Salary Cap wrapped around your neck. Doubt he will be the last one to go by the end of Jan, to free up some money to have a push at promotion.
TRue, but football is all abahrt opinions, and I'd have liked to have seen Lapslie play in midfield. He's not a full back, and was very good at U-23 level in midfield.
Compare Lapslie to Josh Cullen or Conor Gallagher. That is the standard of midfielder we need to aim at. It looks like Sandgaard agrees, which can only be a good thing for the club.
We have to get out of this division before we can get another Cullen or Gallagher, unless Steve Gallen has a miracle up his sleeve.
Stuck with Watson sadly ... a poor mans Pratley. Living off past glories so has emperors new clothes affect. I don’t think Bowyer likes young players which is why Morgan is not first name on the team sheet where as Pratley and Watson start every game .
Bow seems to think that experience can overcome the natural degradation of a players abilities once he reaches a certain age..... yet the previous two seasons Josh Cullen was the perfect example of what a good young player can bring to the team.... we must play EITHER Pratley or Watson as starters but not both!
I hadn’t realised until yesterday that Nigel Clough is manager of Mansfield Town. Good player in his day, and clearly thinks Lapslie can do a good job for them at that level. The consensus view seems to be that Sandgaard is prioritising quality over quantity in January - exactly the right approach IMO. Through necessity Bowyer was forced to sign a lot of players quickly in the summer, and most of them have turned out to be pretty average. I’d say Inniss and Gunter have been the only successes of the actual signings, and Shinnie and Maatsen of the loans. Jury still out on MM. The rest - poor.
Me too - I left him out because a player who looks like he’s hardly ever going to be fit is no good to us. Another 8 weeks out is ridiculous.
Lapslie taking a punch from the Southend keeper and staying on his feet is still one of the best things I've seen on a football pitch. Would give him a lifetime contract just for that. Good luck to him, could never question his work ethic and certainly doesn't deserve abuse.
Just a few things to remember about George Lapslie as he leaves... According to some fans, League One in the 2018-19 season was a better/tougher league to get promoted from than it is this season. Lapslie made 11 starts and 16 substitute appearances in the 2018-19 season; Charlton won 16 of the 27 games that Lapslie featured in. That's a win rate of 59% ... 2% better than Charlton's overall win rate in the 1018-19 season (26 out of 46, or 57%) Charlton lost 6 of the 27 games that Lapslie featured in. His loss rate of (22% of appearances) was the same as the whole team's loss rate that season. George Lapslie was voted Young Player of the Year in the promotion season of 2018-19. If Charlton's squad is - as some fans maintain - substantially weaker/poorer than it was two years ago, then George Lapslie must have declined as a player even more markedly if he is no longer considered good enough even to be part of our available squad this season. Has he really slipped back that far? Or are we letting go another player who will shine in the next few seasons for another Club, leading some of us to wish he was still on our books. Granted Thomas Sandgaard has a five season plan to elevate Charlton to a genuine challenge for the Premier League. And many of us accept that such a plan will need the signing of players a lot better than most we now have wearing our shirt. It is a pity that in the meantime we cannot get the best out of a player who has come up through our academy, and was proudly regarded not that long ago as the best of our promising youngsters.
@lardiman Lapslie was never regarded as the best of our home grown players by anyone honestly don’t know where you have got that from...
