Now the pooves want us to stop heading footballs, although I sense a Spurs conspiracy behind this latest story, to change our game to NFL... please log in to view this image https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/45110282 Discuss...
I see no problem there - football helmets have been around for ages. please log in to view this image In all seriousness I am surprised that kids teams haven't been wearing something like this - am sure it would be better then just outright banning heading.
Be it cycling, boxing, American bulldog or football, unless it's high speed motor sports, helmets do more harm than good.
I would strongly argue that in cycling helmets do a lot more good then harm - better a cracked helmet then a cracked skull. In American football the problem is that they are designed really crap so you can only see aa letter box in front - when you are tackling, you are pretty much blind. Is why rugby is safer without one you can see wtf you are doing. Boxing is a grey area - purpose is to knock out your opponent which helmets are the to prevent.
Cycling helmets will not stop you splitting your skull, they're only designed for a drop about the height of a child and at very low speed, and then only if it manages to land on the top of it. There's far more likelihood of you hurting yourself due to wearing a helmet, than any protection you believe they'll offer. They increase the chances of blows due to the effect of their size and weight, fool people into taking risks believing they're safer, and increase neck injuries from neck rolls and strap snaggings. Any argument for wearing one on a bike applies more to pedestrians and runners, and any images of someone showing a damaged one they reckon protected them, is actually showing a helmet that failed. They're a scam. Boxing's binned them as they increased risk due to people thinking they could take more blows, and also due to poor peripheral vision. The way to make boxing safer, would be to do away with the gloves, as people would break their fists if they hit hard. The purpose of boxing isn't to knock the person out, it's to avoid being hit or knocked out yourself, as it's the art of self defence.
When I used to do full contact kick boxing, the aim was to knock the opponent out, or render them unable to continue. Gloves protect your knuckles and prevents cuts to the opponents head, as you dont want blood everywhere
Very different disciplines. and if you think WTF what you see in the Olympics is proper martial arts fighting think again
Tend to agree but would personally add horse racing to the list where they actually do more good than harm. Oh and cricket and hurling!
