An honour to watch the great man. So many memories. I remember him being closely marked so he bent down to tie his bootlace...the defender took his eye off him....and he was off to score a goal. Another time a defender went and stood next to him whilst he spoke to the manager....obviously he had been told to stick with him....and he followed him to the edge of the pitch when he was subbed. Matt later said he thought he was going to join him in the shower. And all those goals and passes. I voted for the Arsenal goal as best because of it's significance....if the Dell had a roof it would have been blown off.

    Happy birthday, Matt.

What a legend! And how good it is to see him welcomed back into the fold of the club these days after his brief estrangement during Nicola's reign.

    Happy Birthday Matt!

I will not forget that moment. Ever. I was living in Wigan and so had no chance of a ticket. I was watching Soccer Saturday on Sky and I remember even now the hairs going up on the back of my neck as Jeff Stelling said, "There's been a goal at The Dell, is it a fairy tale ending....."

At that moment I knew what had happened and tears welled up in my eyes. Only Matt could have written that ending.

Watching that goal still brings tears to my eyes, a more perfect end to Saints' history at the dear old Dell could not be written by a battalion of scriptwriters sprinkled with fairy dust.

Our greatest legend - Happy Birthday Matty ! All 4 are great and very different goals, and he scored loads of others of similar quality - but my fav is the volley from the freekick v Wimbledon. Only because i was standing right behind the flight of the ball on the Milton Road terrace and shouted ' Matt's going to score' as he flicked it up ! It was also a very hard fought 1-0 win so a very important goal. What a footballer !

I was there....was that the season Wimbledon went down?**

**I notice that Wimbledon are above MK Dons in League 1.

You great soft bugger. I wept like a child, but don't tell anyone!

Happy Birthday, Matt. I missed a lot of his career because of work/location etc, but even in his declining years he was still special. Made you proud to be a Saint having him around.

There was still a bit of time left and I was praying no one else would score for Saints. Matty had to score the last goal...only fitting.

I seem to remember he was partly responsible for getting Big Ron the sack from Man U when he scored his first two goals for us way back in November 86.
