I would put in Aneke instead of Smyth. Two new signings on Monday/ Tuesday. One up to speed, one not.

Fair point. I took this picture of Accrington’s ground when we were last up there. It makes Welling look like the San Siro.

I remember the Accrington game at the Valley when Judas Taylor wound them up. Their players totally lost it when we scored at the end from a Grant penalty. I remember Reams getting on the pitch.

Andrew Shinnie has been a massive loss. He walks into our best side, and is different class to Gilbey. He appears to have disappeared into the Bermuda Triangle, otherwise known as the Charlton Athletic Treatment Room.

 

No one in the ground as is the per norm these days so we won’t see the youth and the elderly trying to get on the pitch this Friday night

I said it last week and I'll say it this week- Maddison has to start. Not only that, he has to be given a run of a few games to see what he can do. Everyone including Bowyer said we lacked creativity, yet we left our most potentially creative player on the bench. If we're serious about promotion we need to see what we can get out of him. Bowyer keeps complaining about us not being good enough in the final third, so let's play the players who can do a bit of damage there. That means Williams as well.

 

Quite agree, our defence is ****e anyway so might as well try and attack to keep their defence busy

 

It’s come out since Saturday that certain players don’t work hard enough in training during the week, and that MM is one of those players. LB prizes this above anything else. **** scoring a brilliant goal the week before in an actual game.

 

Every manager likes players who work hard in training, understandably, and Bowyer has said that he picks players according to how the do in training. But if he's going to take it to the extreme then check it out before you sign a player. Last season Bowyer talked quite a lot about how good he was at improving players, maybe he overestimated this facet of his ability. He can get away with leaving Maddison in the cold if the team are winning, but if they are playing badly and losing, the natives are guaranteed to get restless.

If hard work in training (or lack of it) is going to be a deciding factor when picking the team, players who are lazy in training should not be signed.
It can't be difficult to check this beforehand.

I do broadly agree with Bowyer's attitude to training though.
Talented but lazy players can disrupt a dressing room and undermine efforts to build team spirit.
Lower league Clubs with a limited budget can't afford the luxury of lazy 'star' players in my view.

Long term success and promotion is more likely to be achieved with a team of good players really working for each other, than a team unbalanced by internal stresses caused by skilful showboaters with the wrong attitude.

Having said that, being played in the right position also tends to improve the attitude and effectiveness of players

 

This reminded me of a newspaper article back in the 70s which was essentially based around the point that Charlton would progress as long as Hales, Flanagan and Powell contributed more goals than the defence could be guaranteed to concede.
