The unemployment rate is skewed these days by the fact that fewer young people are offered 40 hours, or whatever, but there’s 3 people classed as employed working 15 hour contracts each instead. There’s no extra work and the pay for doing such few hours does not encourage our younger generation.

    Yes I agree .
I was kind of having a bit of a disagreement with a woman at work this morning .
She said why can't the shops sell Sonos soundbars the same as online price !
I told her they don't have the Rent/Business rates etc but she wasn't having it she said it can't be that much !
I then remembered the Guy who owned Pave on Princes avenue in radio about 5 years ago .
He said that when he 1st started the pub up the business rates where £46,000 PA
As they got more successful over a few years it tripled and he said it isn't becoming sustainable !
People just don't understand the costs

Nail on the head there. With that in mind, right on topic and involving most on here who are also bemoaning the decline in the city center , Richards book the Decade was available on the high street and on-line, how many actually went to a shop to buy it?

If you're interested... Sales so far are about 115 on the launch night (physical sales), about 200 at Waterstones in Hull, 30 at the Cut-price Bookstore in Beverley, there are 90 in Dove House charity shops, of which I think about half are sold, some 35 others have been sold by me at various things, leaving about 940 to be sold by Amazon (56 of which have been Kindle sales). To be fair, I was more reliant on Amazon than most as I'd printed through them (and had to buy the hard copies off them myself). I would imagine other publishing house-backed books would sell more through the bookshops, but not by much...

I didn't even know it was available on kindle Richard , I've got a physical copy but it's quite a big book
to lug around if you read on the train etc.

Anyway if anybody on here hasn't got it then why not ? A must read for any City fan

Thank you. Available on Kindle on Amazon for a tenner (I think). Same money goes to Dove House as if you bought a physical copy though. I've carried one around with me every day since April. My shoulders are a fair bit bigger than they were seven months ago...

My tuppence worth on Hull City centre for what its worth.
Moving the outdoor market was a huge mistake, it virtually killed off Whitefriargate and the rest followed. .
Now we have a popular ( but very low end) market twice a week on Walton Street which simply sucks the trade from all the surrounding areas and the city centre. It also offers unlimited free parking which the city centre doesn't. Put the outdoor market on Queens Gardens, abolish the car parking fees offering free car parking and the city centre would flourish. With the increased footfall the shops would follow. Not everyone wants to shop on line and wait in all day for the van driver, I believe people still want to go out, look at shops, see what they are buying, talk to people, go for a drink/something to eat and socialise.
Sticking Princes Quay in Princes Dock was another massive mistake. A Dock right in the middle of a city centre should be a huge attraction, like the Albert Dock in Liverpool. A shopping centre on legs with the same shops you get in any other city isn't much of an attraction.
I also believe in the Hull pound.
If we all spent a couple of quid a week more locally instead of on line or in Leeds, York, Manchester etc, the money stays locally and should go around creating more.

Lot's to agree with, particularly Princes Quay. Big **** up and actually now I mainly use it as a handy car park for other things in the centre.
Must admit I don’t do the waiting in for online deliveries thing, because mostly once they’ve had one go it’s actually easier to sort a more suitable delivery or just pick it up (I know there is big differences in courier...I just assume it’ll be easy so never wait in)
With the push towards local and environmentally friendly stuff you would think it would be an ideal time to have a real crack at focussing on the Hull Pound in the centre. TWT I suppose

Prinny dock was shafted when Castle street was built, you can't put boats in there as some suggested. I liked prinny quay when it first opened, besides what was in it (the top floor) it drew people through the town away from the bus station towards the old town, and linked the new and the old. In an odd move by the Council they restricted licences for bars clubs and cafes in the center but allowed every second building on Prinny Ave to become a bar (they may have got confused with the similarity of names) And then came St Stephens.

Some people used to think if you handed a fiver over the counter it was a fiver in the pocket of the owner.

Hull has been named as one of the UK’s top 10 cities for economic improvement.

PwC’s Good Growth for Cities 2019 measures the performance of the UK’s largest cities against 10 indicators considered by the public as the most important for economic wellbeing.

It considers factors such as jobs, income and health as the most important factors in the eyes of the public, alongside housing, transport, income distribution, work-life balance and the environment.

Hull ranked ninth for improvement in UK cities on the index, one place ahead of Manchester.

The Index, developed by PwC and think tank Demos, ranks Hull above average in jobs, income distribution and transport.

Last year’s index named Hull as the UK third-most improved city.
