As said, it's great to have this new venue and development. But come on, it is surely a missed opportunity. It's only 3500 when it's a standing event. Otherwise it's only 2600. That's not enough. It could easily have been made bigger, but with screening to make it smaller when needed. Comparing to those 'O2' venues is daft. The likes of Leeds etc have additional bigger venues (Leeds Arena, Echos, etc), typically around 10k. or more. Not saying we should expect something that big, but come on, 2600 seat is way too small for Hull / this region.
It's got 2,000 permanent seats, then for gigs there's 1,500 standing and for more formal type gigs or plays, the ground floor has the standing replaced with 500 more seats.
I agree, the council should have commissioned a full feasibility study as to how large it should be, and then invited the company that are going to run it (you know the one, they operate the First Direct Arena in Leeds, Manchester Arena, York Barbican, and many other arenas in the UK and Europe) for their views. Oh, hang on ... The views expressed in my posts are not necessarily mine.
http://www.hulldailymail.co.uk/news/amazing-fly-through-video-shows-177790 I actually think it looks bloody good
The inside looks great, but don't you think that the outside looks like a Polytechnic drama facility that accidentally got built twice as big as it should have been?
Neither did I from the pictures in the paper, but it struck me straight away on the video. Funny thing, architecture.
What's not to like? It adds nicely to the mix of architecture and has really good concept features that should ensure its success. Another Hull win!
Unless you can find a way of designing an Ice Arena, that doesn't have a floor made of ice, then you're knackered (it kills the acoustics).
It does look good. Very good. But smaller than it ought to have been, and that Hull & region deservel! And £40 MILLION!!!! Mind'st you, looking at that video, I bet it must cost a lot to demolish so many of Hull's buildings, paint the rest white, and plant a wood to the side.
