Leeds Arena, capacity 13,500 , cost £60 million to build. Land costs were on top. The Venue does seem expensive in comparison on the basis of capacity.
The Hull History Centre have replaced the Hessle Road black & white pictures with a historical theme and there is a good immage of the Beverley Gate that was.
The company that are going to run it are protecting their other venues, they don't want the Hull venue treading on Leeds toes hence their recommendation of an inferior 3500 capacity which will still see the downtrodden Hull folk trudging across the M62 to see the decent bands and helping Leeds arena thrive.
I'm not surprised the Leeds Arena was so cheap by comparison, because it looks so bloody cheap when you're in there. Yes the space is a good size but the build quality is appalling, every time I've been I've thought it doesn't even look finished. It's really cheap looking and, judging by this fly through video, you can see why the Hull venue costs more per seat. Just be happy with it.
Foot Asylum & Smiggle (Garish stationery) are taking over the Dorothy Perkins unit in St Stephens, JD also moving in which means another gaping space in Princes Quay. https://completelyretail.co.uk/medi...n_Upon_Hull_site_plan_2017_07_03_15_19_13.pdf
Acts won't come because the building looks nicer. No good saying we can only pay you a quarter of what you would get at Leeds Arena but the building is nicer. Or maybe fans would pay 4 times as much to see a band in an arena with a better build. My lad prefers Sheffield Arena to the Leeds one. That has an ice rink but not the problems with acoustic Lambo suggests this brings. Though he last went to Sheffield Arena to seeSlipknot so maybe acoustics weren't that important.
The Beverley gate will still be a hole in the ground then, I thought they were going to build a replica at ground level.
No suprise, as both stores are re-locating to much bigger sites in the ex TJ Hughes building above & next to Wings. Both Mike Ashleys companies.
I think this move will be good for the city centre in general, revitalising the whole building opposite the station, better than Poundland. I actually like the stuff from USC. They have re-clad the outside as well making it look more modern. (Lets hope with right stuff no further comment needed!!!!)
I don't think they will have any problems filling them quickly. With C of C and finished centre improvements I have never seen the "High Street" offering in Hull as busy. Increased footfall, increased train visitors, national spotlight, there's not many Cities could compete with our numbers at the moment (v last year). All depends on how greedy St Stephens are for their rents I suppose.
From memory, I think I read that the original leases are now due for renewal/termination which is why there is bit of a shake up
When it was first announced they said the exterior was going to be restored in art deco style. After viewing it yesterday, it's obviously Stevie Wonder's interpretation of art deco! The views expressed in my posts are not necessarily mine.
I saw printed on it alucobond, that to me says aluminium But it also says made in Germany so it'll be the good aluminium
