Hull City are set to revive their interest in Southampton striker Jay Rodriguez as head coach Mike Phelan draws up his wish-list for the January transfer window.

The recent loss of Will Keane for up to 12 months with a cruciate ligament injury has heightened City's need for fresh attacking options and Rodriguez is again a leading target.

The 27-year-old forward was the subject of an unsuccessful loan approach from the Tigers in August but Phelan wants to test Southampton's resolve with a second bid in the New Year.

Rodriguez has only started one Premier League game this season, the 2-1 loss at Arsenal in September, and since enjoyed 47 minutes of action from the bench.

Appearances have come in the Saints' Europa League campaign but there is an eagerness for more first-team football in 2017, even if that means a move away from St Mary's.

City are unlikely to be alone in a pursuit of Rodriguez after West Brom and Sunderland also declared an interest in the summer but the former Burnley star is well liked by Phelan.

Although City's head coach suggested last weekend that funds would be available for strengthening in January, a loan move for Rodriguez could suit both clubs best.

City still have two domestic loan spots available and Phelan is expected to fill both of those to supplement a threadbare squad that has been further depleted by injuries.

Phelan was asked how close he came to signing Rodriguez in the summer ahead of facing Southampton three weeks ago and admitted his interest in the Burnley-born striker.

"We looked at a lot of forwards in the window," said Phelan earlier this month.

"The only problem was that we did all our business in one day.

"You're dipping in and out of different hats. He was one of a few we were discussing but it was not one we could really do."

Rodriguez has endured injury problems since winning his one and only England cap in 2013.

An ACL injury ruled him out of the 2014-15 season, before he missed much of last term with a foot problem.

A return to full fitness this season has suggested those woes are over but he has so far been unable to fully convince Claude Puel of his talents.

City's need for a striker is huge in January. A season-ending injury to Keane leaves Phelan able to call upon just Dieumerci Mbokani and Adama Diomande for tomorrow's Premier League clash with West Brom at the KCOM Stadium.

Abel Hernandez is expected to return from a groin injury to face Middlesbrough in 10 days but his future continues to be the subject of speculation ahead of the window.

Although Aston Villa are unlikely to come calling again after spending funds elsewhere, the Uruguay international is yet to commit his long-term future to the Tigers on the back of contract talks which began in August.

Watched the Southampton game last night, didn't do a lot, though neither did Long. Up front they were poor.

I have to say that Sparta's defence was well organised, not like ours though.

We seem to be linked with the same players every window and never sign them. Fraizer Campbell was the best example. Mind you we did loan Nick Powell eventually after being linked with him for about 5 windows in a row.

we need loans, cheap forgotten players, strikers who scored 20 a season in Malta, the "why not take a punt" sorts, "looks good on Youtube" picks, anyone who sounds South American, bench-warmers, sons of famous players.. you name 'em we'll sign 'em

What we don't need is stability and investment in the future.. that just won't cut the mustard at 'ull

Gave up reading the HDM transfer news a while back they appear to pick a name out of thin air and go with it adding somewhere along the line "of course city will face stiff competition from several other PL clubs" no kidding , plus he's(Rodriguez) been plagued with injuries for the last 3 years, haven't we got enough of our own sick notes, if city are still in the hands of the terrible twins come January, cannot see us doing much business transfer wise, if any it will be players transferring out.( elmo appears to be pining for SB, plus Abel wants his big money move, or to be fair his agent does)

They won't get relegated, not with Joycey in charge.

He'd be a decent player, but I doubt he'd come here and with his previous bad injury it would be Sod's law he'd be knackered long term in his first game!
