I'm sure it's some clever intellectual trap, but 'wolf' and 'gulf' both in the list of words there's no rhyme for, really?
Due to the fact that wolf and gulf have identical consonant patterns but different vowels then that's assonance not rhyme. Larkin would have known that being a top poetist, racist and general all-round ****.
Yep, I've always been a bit ambivalent about the 'he's one of our own' Hull Larkin love-in myself. Good poet, but a bit of a twat, all told. And if he wants words with no rhyme, where's 'orange'?
Any one else noticed that the Hull Daily Mail has dropped "the" when talking about The Old Town? I have never heard anyone call it just "Old Town" (I'm bored and feeling a bit pedantic) Seeing as I'm on one, when did a schoolgirl getting her dress muddy at a school prom become front page news?
The guy was a bit of dick according to ex colleagues who worked with him in library at UoH. He hated Hull, never wanted to be here, that's why he's rushing to get the train. PS...His poetry was nothing special
I have relatives who worked with him the University. He was a kind and friendly man. He was a bit of a miseryguts about life in general, but there is ample evidence that Hull suited him down to the ground. Hence why he wrote lots of poems about it and lived locally, when he could have had the pick of similar jobs anywhere in the country. He did not stick around here by necessity. Some proper critics rate him as the best British poet of the last century, even if he did put that hedgehog through the lawnmower blades .
I am naming no names but someone who worked closely with him in the UoH library, thought he was as described in my previous post. Perhaps 'dick' is a bit strong on my behalf, but that was the picture I got from the various stories.
Speaks volumes that the COC bid vid uses his poem 'Here' with Tom Courtenay reading it. I believe Norman Collier was also considered for the narration, but those Yorkshire ecky thumpers Ian McMillan and John Godber were deemed to be substandard by a country mile for the words.
He invited staff and partners round to his place for dinner/chat when he had no need. He was probably bored ****less by their chat but he made the effort. Not everyone will have the same opinion, as SB has proved on here.
No one knew if he was a Red and White or a Black and White, his diaries got burnt after his death I believe..
