Perhaps one for Cosicave, but a locked tyre is neither giving optimum braking power or turn-in. Is it not standard driving technique to briefly come off the brake to get the tyre rotating again, allowing you to stop faster? In this case, obviously he ran into Ricciardo before he could get the car stopped.
If the Vettel contact was stupid enough then the ricciardo crash was bonkers knowing he was damaged and probably wouldn't make the corner as usuall so why race? I think Bottas was taking the ultra defending role too far.
Let’s put the team to one side, it’s just pointless and inconsistent full stop. I can’t prove it, but I think it would have been different if Vettel had gone off. A penalty is for the action in accordance with the rules, not the perceive damage or loss you have caused yourself as a mitigating factor because of your own actions. Technically it’s all bo11icks, always has been and always will be.
usually I find penalties are designed to either not punish at all or to take a place away. that 10 seconds is saying silly boy, be about your business
Well I bet Hamilton and Mercedes will take this result. After FP2 it looked like it would be 5th and 6th at best. Maybe a podium if the Bulls broke down. Some outstanding driving in the wet and they've pulled this result out of the bag. They probably shouldn't have covered Kimi so desperately but I guess they had to cover all angles. Bottas just plain ran out of tyres and then ran out of sense.
yeah I think it all worked out perfect for them. had they not covered Raikkonen maybe vettel would have been in better position. I think they will be delighted. Ferrari from the start were in full flapping mode. they split the strategys, then raikkonen was **** as anyone would expect so vettel could never race mercs. hamilton drove away from bottas 3 times. Ferrari really didnt deliver.
Bit clumsy on both counts from Bottas, but come on... I think we can put away the pitch forks and torches. Had he have ruined either Ricciardo's or Vettel's race then he might deserve something a bit more punishing. Really, he came off worse in both counts though, so he kinda penalized himself. I don't think we need to be calling for bans or his head.
I get what you mean , but imho , the fact he didn’t really ruin their races , should not really matter . Otherwise every penalty decision would wait to see what impact any incident has ultimately .
Vettel hit Bottas and decimated his car just a handful of races back. Vettel got a 5s penalty. I'm not sure what much more people expect Bottas to get, yes I agree Bottas was fully at fault but in reality it was a minor hit in the end. So say 5s for each hit... 10 seconds?
Not every contact is a penalty. Never had been. Ultimately he penalized himself anyway, so regardless of an additional 10 seconds or not, he already suffered the consequences.
My point exactly . You can only give a penalty on the incident , if you want to wait and see if the incident has a great or minor impact on the other car / cars , then you are looking for trouble IMHO . Yes I agree Searge , of course not all penalties are as a result of contact .
Like the time he took Kimi out in Baku but then drove to 2nd (I think) because of the safety car. Any other series these decisions would be laughed at. 5 sec penalty’s for overtaking under yellows or behind the safety car, or 5 sec for track limits - hmmm let me just consider the obvious differences there!
In reality that penalty was too lenient. However Charlie says it’s alright on the 1st lap because the rules don’t really apply if your Ferrari, Merc or RB.
Remember how annoying it was when every little thing was being penalized? I'm more than cool with it being a little more relaxed lately. Sure, maybe penalties should be steeper when it's out and out dangerous, but let the little stuff work its self out where it can...
