hdm article about dean windass has this comment at the end

    Nearlyhome
I strongly object HDM , to a footballer being called a Hero , heroes are made during civil conflicts and NOT on a ruddy football pitch ask all those that have served in conflict zones , DW is an Ex footballer end off and a possible legend if he must be put on high .

well, my opinion is this: Nearlyhome, you can **** off. i choose my heroes on whatever basis i decide. the dictionary definition includes someone admired for their achievements, and that can include footballers, musicians, scientists, or whoever the ****ing **** i choose.

I think ruddy is a good word. Especially when Partridge said "Ruddy bloody good."

It's just needlessly picky this hero thing. It's very common parlance to talk about someone such as a footballer or other celebrity being a childhood hero and it in no way compares them to those who've fought in wars.

My mate talked into going to see Gary Numan.I quite liked some of his songs back in the day but thought he might be disappointing in concert.
It was excellent so I went back to see him again a couple of months ago.

mate of mine told me similar. blown away by the new stuff. trouble was, 1st gig was about £23 in a small venue, but the next one is £65 in a 5000-seater, and he's not happy with the increase.
