Absolutely. Means those of us who have lived our lives away from Hampshire have had to live with what many seem as patronising comments, but after 40 years of living in the North West I've got used to it. The flip side of that is that no-one I meet dislikes Saints and most hold them in high regard.

The other realisation I have is that our fans - especially the lunatics who will travel to Hartlepool on a wet Tuesday (this is now my ultimate measure of mad loyalty*) - are as passionate as any. But it stays with us like some sort of inner circle. Go into Liverpool or Manchester on matchday and every bugger you meet knows that we're playing that day. Yet go to a home game and even quite close to the ground people don't seem to be aware that there is a game happening, let alone who we're playing. Hot bed of football Southampton isn't!
