I was massively sceptical when he re-signed for us, but he put 2 past Newcastle's U23s in his first game back, and has just done the same to Sheffield United's. I know they're youth teams, but they are both Prem sides so their kids should be at least somewhat decent. I'm starting to think Benji's worth a punt in the first team, even if just from the bench. I'm well aware the jump from U23 level to seniors is huge and he may flop completely, but he can't do much more to earn a chance. Especially with our senior strikers seemingly completely unable to hit a barn door with an infinite supply of banjos. With our strikers misfiring, and Benji on fire in the U23s, if he's not going to be given a chance now when will he be? You'd have to wonder what the point was in going through all that rigmorole to get him to sign a new contract if we're just going to leave him in the youth team regardless of performance...
I would certainly give him a go. Parky challenged him to knuckle down if he wants his chance and he couldn't have done any more.
That's probably 'cos Parky said when he returned to sign his contract that if he didn't 'make his mark' sharpish he would have to send him out on loan for that very reason, Blondie
no Sunderland striker has scored a league goal this season ! (statcat site) Benji on the bench on Saturday give him 20 mins or instead of Wyke if playing from start (that did not make sense for some reason !) if you see what i mean.
I don't see how Parkinson can drop the current strike force, reminds me of the time we had a young Michael Bridges on the bench but the strike force were just too good to give him a chance. Seriously though, he might aswell start or at least be replacing Graham on about 60mins. We may aswell give him a go. Now I'm depressed thinking about Bridges having to go to Leeds and play in Europe to get some games as we had Phillips and Quinn.
Danny Dichio was preferred to Bridges not only to replace Quinn (fine) but also Philips (shocking decision), and the beginning of the end for the Reid era. On the current question unless there is an improvement to our front three, however attained, it will be the end of the PP era.
Danny Dichio had nothing to do with the Peter Reid era coming to an end. He was a decent and reliable squad player for us, to be honest. Stewart and Flo were brought in to replace Quinn and Phillips.
You might be right mate, but I thought he was a plank compared to Bridges, not just my opinion either. The game I was talking about came in 1999 against West Ham when Dichio preferred to Bridges by Reid came on as substitute and missed a late sitter that would have put us two up and top of the league, and then when the Hammers equalised at the death the chance was lost possibly forever in my lifetime, so a bit of a watershed in my memory, and for Peter Reid probably tbh.
I always thought Bridges was overrated. You can get 10 guys watching a match and we'll all see something different I seen Dichio as a natural stand-in for Quinn and Bridges as a natural stand-in for SKP. When Quinny was out, it made sense to me, for us to play Dichio as it kept the little and large forward partnerships that our tactics thrived off. Mind you, we could pull them both out of retirement and they'd still be as good as anything that we have now.
What have you been smoking..... All of your posts are making perfect sense (well, maybve not the best grammar but the points you are making are spot on Monty lad. Nice one!!) Agree completely. There is no way we should start Saturday's game without him or Neil on the bench. Both of them have pace and, as much as I haven't been impressed with kimpioka last season, He has 4 in his first week back with the club. Get him in the squad and give him a kick about FFS!!
