    Ahmed Salam has signed a 1 year contract, with the Club holding the option for a further year.

    I'm almost certain that will be the reason, but with the club having the years option in their favour, he will almost certainly be here another year regardless. If we go up it will obviously make the whole thing easier for both parties

    The problem with the one year deals the club can trigger, is that they're usually the beginning of the end.

    Your right, especially in our clubs case. In this case though as it stands, the player is happy, isn't activity trying to leave, hasn't got an agent trying to manufacture a move and is focused on the job of winning promotion, if we go up their isn't expected to be any complications on what looks like a 3 year deal

    Who knows as things can change daily in football, but ATM he's happy, wants to stay and is fully focused on promotion as apposed to contract talks.

    From what I've seen, Jones has better technical attributes than Smallwood, and Ashbee.

    But the mastery of that role comes with a level of experience and commitment they I'd love to see him develop with us for the next few years

    I think most underestimate the technical ability that Ashbee had.
    A leader like no other we've seen, nor likely will see. But he could play too. Just look at some of the important goals he scored, including a handful of stunners.
    I like Jones a lot. He's already a key player for us. Hopefully he stays for much longer and develops into our new Ashbee, although replicating him will be impossible.

    Fair point, I didn’t think of it like that. I suppose given his age he wouldn’t be on a massive amount anyway and with the salary cap not applying it’s easier.

    McCann revealed he attended a board meeting prior to Saturday’s 1-1 draw with Gillingham, where the topic of new contracts was firmly on the agenda.

    “There’s players out of contract in the summer, there’s options on players,” he said.

    “We’ve got George Long, Reece Burke, Alfie Jones, Jordy de Wijs, there’s quite a lot, but we do speak – we had a board meeting (on Thursday) to speak about this, Josh Magennis is another one.

    “They’ve all got options on their contracts.”

    City have eight games left to seal their fate and secure a return to the Championship at the first time of asking, and while being in a promotion battle is a great place to be, it also makes planning for the new season something of a challenge, while the ongoing economic impact of coronavirus continues to play havoc with the finances at clubs up and down the country, and the Tigers are no different.

    “There’s a certain time when we need to give the players that answer, it’s very difficult in this kind of climate in terms of no fans in the stadium, where we are going to be next year, what league are we going to be in,” he said.

    “There’s a lot that you have to weight up in your mind to get this decision right when you speak to these players about new contracts.

    “Yes, there’s a process in place and there’s communication going on but these things stay in house and try to do our business correctly instead of coming out and splurging it all over the media.”

    I think a “challenge” is something of an understatement.
    All hypothetical with figures
    We can offer you
    4 grand a week in league 1 if we go up it’s 10 grand a week
    Players agent gets him a deal for 10 in the championship anyway
    Must be a nightmare
