Hoedt was a full dutch international who'd made 50-odd appearances for Lazio & in Lemina we were signing a pretty well rated Juventus player in what was seen as a bit of a coup. So agree that at the time they could hardly be called bad selections.

    Isn't hindsight wonderful...

Lazio haven't been much cop since James Richardson co-starred alongside his elaborately bedecked beverages during Serie A's "Football Italia" heyday.

Yep and he's our record signing as well.

I think it says something when most of the teams in the Premier League have a record signing more than ours, and ours is a striker who never scored for us.

Wolves, Watford, Bournemouth, Palace, Villa & Sheffield Utd teams who are on a par with us have a higher record signing

It makes me scream with rage!!!!!!

I should imagine we've comfortably spent more than those clubs though

I understand it’s frustrating that we don’t always spend big, but it’s more about spending wisely like we used to.

Liverpool got Robertson for £8m. Leicester got Kante for £8m and Mahrez for about £500k. VVD and Mane are probably the best examples of how we’ve bought wisely at fairly cheap prices.

In the current side, Bednarek was a lot cheaper than Hoedt/Vest. Bertrand/Armstrong weren’t that pricey. Djenepo at £12m could be a great signing.

Granted you do need the more expensive signings too, Ings for example, but it’s not all about spending big/breaking transfer records.

Joelinton was £40m! Haller was £45m!

Both of them are quality players (yes, Hoedt too!) - but their attitude sucks, hence they are of no use to us. Hard work beats talent, when talent doesn`t work hard as a wise man once said.

No problem with us not being big spenders. And no problem with the owners not putting their own money in. But I'd feel a lot happier if I was certain they had a coherent plan, that didn't involve us financing Gao's personal debts.

We are always doomed to sell our best players to `big` clubs. Its a matter of political geography - the `big` clubs come from big cities, and they have more money to buy success. Its the same in every country in the world. Southampton is a small city. So is Aberdeen. Small city clubs will have their moments in the sun - like us, Ipswich, Blackburn for example - but not on a sustained basis. And I`m OK with that.

Our record signing is actually Danny Ings - I'd say he was worth it.
