Has been consistent this season, and very reliable partner with Virgil van Dijk..Well done Joe Matip

 

We have to give him a new contract.

 

Still dont trust him to head the ball, but he has grown into the role alongside Van Dijk. Easily ahead of Lovren now

 

He's certainly improved recently. I'd agree he's ahead of Lovren now.

 

Is he ahead of Gomez?

 

I'd expect us to start next season with Gomez and VVD.

 

He was super last night, brought the A game on the big occasion which says something about his mentality, despite doubts across the whole season that I think we all share. I had him on my 'not bothered if we shift him' list but last night has forced me to revise my opinion, on a couple of others too

 

Especially as we've given him a new name.

 

Agreed. Gomez is the future and we need him to be integrated back into defence again.

Matip is a very good 3rd choice centre back.

 

Lovren is the one that should worry not matip

 

What's his new name?. If Lovern was playing last night I doubt we are going to keep a clean sheet.

 

His name is Joel, dribs mate - not Joe.
And it's Lovren, not Lovern, btw

'Joel Matip has been really good - and not just defensively'

Joel Matip has positively impacted both the Liverpool defence and midfield since taking up a regular place in the side in 2019.


That’s the verdict of former Reds defender Mark Lawrenson, who praised Matip’s consistency and bravery in possession during Jürgen Klopp’s side’s season run-in.

The No.32 has started 19 of the last 22 games in all competitions, with one more still to come in the form of the Champions League final against Tottenham Hotspur on June 1.

Matip is in pole position to partner Virgil van Dijk at centre-half at Estadio Metropolitano, according to Lawrenson, even with Joe Gomez and Dejan Lovren staking a claim.

“It would be tough on Matip [to not start the final]. He has been really, really good – and not just defensively,” Lawrenson told Liverpoolfc.com.

“He has been a bonus because he has been coming out with the ball and committing opposition midfield players. If you’re a midfield player in that team, you’re looking at that and thinking it’s great because he’s giving you a little bit more room to play.

“I think it’ll be Joel Matip and Virgil van Dijk [in the final], I can’t see any other combination.”
