Play-off matches ... season 1986-87 Because they finished 19th in the table, Charlton Athletic were included in a four team play-off competition against the three teams who finished 3rd, 4th and 5th in the Second Division. 3rd & 4th placed Oldham Athletic and Leeds United contested one (two leg) semi-final, while Charlton played Ipswich Town in the other semi-final. The semi-final winners then met to play a two-leg Final, which in the 1986-87 season eventually went to a third 'replay' match at a neutral venue (Birmingham City's St Andrews stadium). After one of the best play-off final games ever seen, Charlton Athletic won promotion via a penalty shoot-out.
