Lee Bowyer has had a fair bit of stick from our fanbase since the game yesterday. On this occasion, some of it is deserved. We all know that he’s been dealt a bad hand, but basics like free kicks and beating the first man at corners should be sorted out by him & Jackson on the training ground. His tactics yesterday were a complete mystery. Washington totally isolated up front on his own, against three big defenders. Why wasn’t Josh Davison even on the bench ? Why isn’t Aneke ever fit enough to play 90 mins? The squad is horribly unbalanced. My worry is Lee Bowyer is collecting a certain type of (defensive) midfielder- we have at least 5 now - when there are glaring holes up front and particularly at the back. Ben Watson was average yesterday - is he really any better than Pratley, JFC, Gilbey, Morgan, Vennings or Lapslie ? Bowyer’s other immediate task in the next two weeks - other than signing players - is to give Alfie Doughty a big kick up the arse. In public in necessary. He’s not been averse to doing so with Albie Morgan & Dillon Phillips.
I'm very disinclined to criticise Lee Bowyer, but I can't really disagree with any of this. The next two weeks are crucial now from a player signing (& dead wood clearing) point of view. Some fans are predicting we're going to be short-changed again, with a couple of average L1 players and an unproven loanee or two sold to us as being much better than they actually are. I very much hope this does not happen. To have any kind of success this season we need FIVE quality players - clearly better than what we have now. Everybody can see it. If we don't get them, I'm afraid Bowyer and Gallen will eventually have to take responsibility. I believe Thomas Sandgaard is for real, in his ambition as in all other aspects. He has not bought CAFC to watch it meander around in the 3rd tier feeling sorry for itself. Success is now being funded and is now expected. And rightly so.
I cannot disagree with any of that. I doubt any of his doubters could do any better with the present squad, but sometimes it seems like he is carrying out training ground experiments in a league game.
A now familiar LB managerial trait on display after we went 1-0 up yesterday ....we go very negative & get pushed back. It will end up costing us late goals soon.
