Making a bid in excess of £30 million for a player over 30 who's struggled for fitness and form in the last 3 years, looks a pale shadow of what he was previously as well as looking overweight and whose club is pretty keen to get rid of only makes sense if the bidding club hadn't got a clue or a long term plan and is trying to keep fans happy by buying a "name". And getting turned down by said name is embarrassing because it shows throwing money around isn't necessarily going to work if you don't have the structures in place to make the most of it.
