Thought the youngsters did well in a team that have never played together before, if anything the more experienced players let them down by giving the ball away too easily and too often.
van de Beek should be sold at a car boot sale this Sunday or as soon as one can be opened.

Most disappointing player in the squad. Not sure what happened to him. He came with such a high reputation and great promise. He now doesn’t even deserve a place in the squad. His confidence must be extremely low. Madrid did want him but then let him go. Did they know something we didn’t ?

He tried to be Scholes like tonight about 6 times (he let the ball run across him on the turn) and lost the ball every time, his passing is poor, his attepmts to win the ball are weak.
Not often i have a total downer on a player, i can usually see good bits and chances to improve but this poor lad needs a move to somewhere quieter/easier.

I was very excited when he came in. We will be lucky to get £25m for him with his showings this season. He would do well at a team like West Ham, I think. Mid-table team with low expectations.

Some here @Treble for example hate him. But whilst he’s not the most talented in the squad he does a good job and mostly reliable. He just needs to cut out the occasional dangerous bad pass.

Nah I don't hate him, he's simply a very bad player.

Look it's simple, I've listed every one of his failings and nobody's ever argued against them. I've also asked people who rate him to list his qualities and not one person has ever taken up that offer. Saying intangible comments like "he does a good job" are meaningless.

I'll repeat again - he can't tackle, his positional play is the worst for a supposed dm, he's always out of position, it's why he gets blind-sided and ends up giving away foul after foul after foul, his passing is inconsistent and by and large absolute ****, and he has no pace to make up for his other failings. He's a liability.

He's the single biggest reason our back 4 have been exposed this season, put under unnecessary pressure and blamed even though they've been doing brilliantly having to deal with his fck ups and/or disappearances on the pitch

^^^^^^^ see cogent, coherent, critical analysis <ok>

I think you out argued yourself there, Treble.

Since the team started putting out consistent results, Fred alongside McTominay have been magnificent. Fred in particular is very effective at breaking up plays with his interceptions. He links up very well with McTominay and actually contributes to the drive going forward.

I think that you need to update your thesis a tad bit.

I can't believe ppl are actually arguing FOR a player that's holding us back, and that hand on heart wouldn't put ahead of half a dozen others in the Prem.

It's like turkeys voting for Christmas <laugh>

Clearly when Fred and McTominay have started games, we have performed better. Are you suggesting that playing with ten men is better than having Fred in the squad?

Your arguments are in absolute terms such as Fred is the reason why we leak goals. It begs to ask what happens when Fred is playing and we get clean sheets?

All I've said is that when you don't have adequate protection in front, the defence get bombarded by opposition attacks. That's exactly what happens to our back 4, and the more and more I watch them, the more I think they deal with his shortcomings admirably.

I actually think our back 4 is better than ppl give them credit for. They have their problems I know, but they actually compensate for not having enough protection in front of them, more than any other side in the current Top 4/5 sides.

The fact you suggest he needs McTominay next to him to be half decent is damning in itself.

Fred and McTominay should not be our first choice anyway. It should be Bruno, Pogba + One.

Now you’re suggesting that McTominay should not even be in the team. Really now?!

And what is wrong with two players complimenting each other? You can’t expect the Center of the midfield to simply be a one player’s act. It is also clear that Bruno plays better when Pogba is in the side. We see the correlation in the results.

Personally, I enjoy players in the mold of McTominay and Fred. They are not always shiny and pretty, but are effective and never afraid to get involved. They certainly don’t go missing in games and I attribute a bulk of the consistent performance this to their understanding in building up plays from the back.

It is why I’d rather have Henderson in goal versus De Gea because I believe that Henderson does better job organizing the line in front of him. My believe aside, we can see that in overall team’s output is better when Henderson plays in goal versus De Gea.

Before I get shutdown, I’m by no means suggesting that the we can’t make any of the aforementioned positions stronger by bringing in better players, but I’m reaffirming that the current squad is certainly good enough to compete with the best in this league.

McTominay should be in the side but when he's not, and Fred is being chosen, he's a mess.

McTominay and Fred wouldn't be my preferred starting 11 but I can understand with squad rotation, certain games e.g. in the CL, the need for McTominay and another Defensive Midfielder may be necessary.

I always appreciated the need for a Carrick + Fletcher partnership. I very much see McTominay in that Fletcher mould. But Fred is no Carrick. And herein lies the problem. Carrick was never a great tackler, but he could read the game, and knew where to be to intercept or close down runs, and he was a great passer of the ball. Fred is a fart in the wind compared to Carrick.

When Carrick was playing, there was only one player in the league I would've considered having other than him. Just one. When Keane was playing there was no one else I would've had. With Fred there's half a dozen easily, and all are better than him. He's 28 btw, he aint going to get any better if that's what you're hoping for.

I think that you’re being very harsh on the man.

I’m sure that when Fletcher was in the team, there were many other players in the league that would take his position. It still doesn’t diminish the fact that he fitted very well with the team. Heck, Anderson was in the starting eleven for many years as we won the Champions league.

Having the very best player in every single position is rarely an achievable goal for any club. Keane and Carrick were generationally talented at what they did. But overall, it’s about how these uncolourful players complement others in the side. As such, I don’t think anyone in this starting 11 is a waste of space in this side. They’ve all destroyed the best of the best together this season and earned many scoreless draws together against top sides.

McTominay is more like Fletcher in that role, and if Scott McTominay was poor I'd say the same. But he's not.

We don't need the best in every position, but the defensive midfielder is a key position and he needs to be in the top 2 or 3 in the league. Fred is nowhere near that.
