The word on Twitter is that he’s looking for £25,000 per week and the club have offered no more than £5k.

it’s possible he will leave as the parties are so far apart.

I feel his real worth is probs £15k a week at his age. They could put some performance clauses In to bump it up based of appearances and goals etc....?

the thing for me is.. if he goes for free... we’ll need a replacement and likely have to pay at least that for a replacement!!

It would fit Mike’s strategy to lock him in in order to sell him on in a year surely?

But of course the Charnley effect may come into play where we let him go for for free and then sign someone for £40m on £50k a week.

Given the average wage in the PL these days is £61k (dragged up by the top earners but still) £25k doesn’t seem ludicrous* for a journeyman player who can do a job, let alone one with a bit of promise.

I’m sure mikey (or more likely his acolytes) are trying to show off their hard man negotiating skills by telling the player they don’t want him really and he’s free to go elsewhere, in the hope of saving 10k a week for a few years.

What they’re actually doing is undermining what loyalty a local lad has to his hometown club, which is the only thing making him consider signing here rather than going elsewhere for more money and better treatment.

*in football terms. In the real world it’s madness.

Incredibly greedy if so based on what he's achieved so far. Nothing new with modern young footballers though, the agents just take the piss and the players/parents hide behind them saying "its nothing to do with me". I'd still pay him it though as he has value in the market so there is no point cutting off your nose to spite your face.

So you’re saying he’s incredibly greedy for asking to be paid what the market says he’s worth?

That’s twisted logic even for you, Pouchy.

I think that's an incredible effort to twist my words, even for you.

Saying he has value in the market, and saying he isn't worth 25k per week are clearly two very different things. He has value as a young inexperienced player with a hell of a lot to learn. However in England the first sign of ability is now met with large clubs being willing to pay inflated fees to hoover them up. How that would mean he is worth 25K a week is beyond me? You'd be massively overpaying him based on what we've seen so far. Not a little, massively. However due to the nature of said market, then its worth protecting your asset. Sometimes as a smaller PL club, you just have to bite the bullet.

He isn’t worth that much! I’d argue 5K with add ons is probably right. It pains me to say this but I’ll side with the fat urchin

Agree. He’s allowed to chance his arm. I just fail to see how he is currently worth 25k per week. If he gets it though, then that’s his worth!

That doesn't mean he's worth it. It just means that is what a larger club is happy to pay him to hoover him up just in case he is good. Big difference.

You are worth what someone is prepared to pay. If a club will pay him that, then so be it as that is his worth, to them.

So if I’ve got this right, you don’t think he’s worth £25k/week but you’d pay him it anyway?

Makes you a bit of a mug, doesn’t it?

No a mug would let pride and "doing the right thing" get in the way of making a cold hard business decision. We don't have the luxury to make some stand against this type of thing. Its simply about accepting the market you are operating in and making the best of it. By giving him the inflated contract you retain the option of flogging him for good money while his stock is high once he signs. If we take some "he isn't worth that and we've got to make the point to all the young players" type of stance that say a Liverpool or Man U could, all we do is lose a young player we'd like to retain for 400K instead of 15m etc. No brainer in business terms.

That's just an opinion, not a fact. As it happens its not an opinion I agree with. I see a lot more factors coming into that assessment.

Just because you can obtain that wage elsewhere, it does not mean you are worth that. People get overpaid for jobs all the time. None more so than in football. I mean if we took that as the only barometer it would mean Alexis Sanchez is worth £391,000 a week. It would mean Christian Benteke is worth 120K a week. It would mean Salomon Rondon and all those other footballers playing in China are worth what they get paid. Clearly they are not. Hence Mr Ighalo has admitted to taking a paycut to join a better club.

To me worth and wages in football is a fairly difficult thing to correlate, and certainly not something which would be dictated by what someone is willing to pay them.

So whereas Matty may be able to exploit his situation to get overpaid elsewhere, it doesn't mean that is what he is worth.
