He's confirmed on twitter. Club have a one-year extension clause but will not activate it. Out of contract at the end of the season. He's not injured either by the way. Mods: can merge if you want but I thought this deserved a thread on it's own.
Well, it doesn't surprise me, but will be very sorry to see him go. I would have thought he would have been a favourite of Nigel, but seems to have fallen out of favour with him. I have always like him. I thought our best midfield in the EPL when SB was with us was Robbo/Meyler/Hudd/Jake/Elmo, when we played 352.
Doesn't surprise me, the way he's been treated as of late. All the best to him, one of my fave City players since he arrived. He'll easily get a place in a top half Championship team. He deserves better.
I respect him for saying that he's not been offered a contract extension shocking decision by the club
My favourite player over the last few years who epitomised the Steve Bruce era. His commitment to the cause has been fantastic and I always think a far more effective player than I think sometimes given credit for. Always felt we were on the front foot with Meyler in the team, and had a good finish on him. And I really don't think it's a coincidence that we had a better win ratio with him in the team than out of it. Those goals against Sunderland and particularly Sheffield United in the cup run are very happy memories. Very sorry to see him go.
He earns too much, paying Meyler type wages is no longer viable. Sad but true. The other big earners will all be on their way as well. I hope we can offer our other "Dave" enough to keep him at the club for next year at least but cost cutting is the name of the game at the moment. One thing I am pretty sure about... David Meyler will give his all until the end.
Heard a good story about Meyler, don't really care if it’s true... My mate said one of his colleagues lives next door to Meyler. One day shortly after having his kid (has he got one / some?) Meyler knocked on his neighbour’s door and asked if he’d give him a hand putting a new cot together? “No problem”, says the neighbour. “I’ll pop round now”. When he gets there Meyler sits down, grabs his console controller and says “there’s the cot and the tools mate”.
Sad to hear that, always liked Big Dave and scored some cracking and important goals for us including those shown and also the one against Liverpool when we won 3-1. Why wouldn't you offer him the extra year when the knobheads in charge obviously don't want to spend money bringing anyone else in. Gives his all and most importantly cares about the club, shame more of them don't.
How much does he earn? Why would Meyler be one of our higher earners? People say this whenever we stupidly let a player go. Some said we couldn't afford to give Macca and Rosenior new deals, yet they were snapped up by lesser sides with no PL money. The state of the current squad is in no small part down to how we've routinely thrown away reliable, committed players like this every window. The squad Bruce built, a squad of dedicated professionals who would put their body on the line for the team, has been gradually dismantled over time and replaced with half-arsed loan players who think they're doing us a favour by being here but aren't even that good. This is the effect of having a 'recruitment team' instead of just letting the manager get on with it. It's utterly stupid to persist with this failed strategy when it's so clear to see how it's failed us. Take Dawson and Meyler out of this team, probably lose Larsson too after ****ing him about and it really doesn't look good for next season whatever league we're in.
His performance for Ireland against Wales was outstanding, and precisely the type of thing we need right now. Admittedly we've not seen that much of it, but how much of that is down to Meyler and how much of it is down the management/the club making him feel unwanted (this has been festering for a while) I don't know.
Yeah he said how torn he was about doing that, but just didn't see him getting game time with all those players we brought in. Bet he regretted it soon after cos the new lads all struggled or didn't bother.
