    LAST TIME OUT

    MIDDLESBROUGH 3 STOKE CITY 0

The Riverside Stadium is a football stadium in Middlesbrough, England, which has been the home of Middlesbrough since it opened in 1995. Its current capacity is 34,742,[4][5] all seated, although there is provisional planning permission in place to expand that to 42,000 if required.[1]

Been a few times decent ground possibly the seats need replacing had that slightly worn look last time I went although no one is using them at the moment.

    HEAD TO HEAD

Our first league visit to Middlesbrough was 9/11/1901, first victory was five years later both gmes ended 2-1, our recent record against Boro is distincly average 1 win in the last 11 victories stretching over 50 years. Amazingly we have the change of our first double over Middlesbrough since 1971-72.
Just about on the fringes of the play offs under Colin and his trusty seconds Jeppers and Blackie good win on Saturday useful squad no with our ex Fisher.
You know what you get with Darnell, he wins the cheapest of fre kicks at the merest touch of the opponent, in a way sorries he gone but suspect we will never find out why?

    FAMOUS MIDDLESBROUGH PEOPLE

Ernest William Hornung (7 June 1866 – 22 March 1921) was an English author and poet known for writing the A. J. Raffles series of stories about a gentleman thief in late 19th-century London. Hornung was educated at Uppingham School; as a result of poor health he left the school in December 1883 to travel to Sydney, where he stayed for two years. He drew on his Australian experiences as a background when he began writing, initially short stories and later novels.

In 1898 he wrote "In the Chains of Crime", which introduced Raffles and his sidekick, Bunny Manders; the characters were based partly on his friends Oscar Wilde and his lover, Lord Alfred Douglas, and also on the characters of Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson, created by his brother-in-law, Arthur Conan Doyle. The series of Raffles short stories were collected for sale in book form in 1899, and two further books of Raffles short stories followed, as well as a poorly received novel. Aside from his Raffles stories, Hornung was a prodigious writer of fiction, publishing numerous books from 1890, with A Bride from the Bush to his 1914 novel The Crime Doctor.

The First World War brought an end to Hornung's fictional output. His son, Oscar, was killed at the Second Battle of Ypres in July 1915. Hornung joined the YMCA, initially in England, then in France, where he helped run a canteen and library. He published two collections of poetry during the war, and then, afterwards, one further volume of verse and an account of his time spent in France, Notes of a Camp-Follower on the Western Front. Hornung's fragile constitution was further weakened by the stress of his war work. To aid his recuperation, he and his wife visited the south of France in 1921. He fell ill from influenza on the journey, and died on 22 March 1921, aged 54.

Although much of Hornung's work has fallen into obscurity, his Raffles stories continued to be popular, and have formed numerous film and television adaptations. Hornung's stories dealt with a wider range of themes than crime: he examined scientific and medical developments, guilt, class and the unequal role played by women in society. Two threads that run through a sizeable proportion of his books are Australia and cricket; the latter was also a lifelong passion.

Preston North End travel to Middlesbrough on Tuesday night looking for their first league double over the Teessiders in nearly 50 years.

The Lilywhites triumphed 3-0 at home to Neil Warnock’s side back in December and will be chasing their second ever win at the Riverside Stadium, to do their first double over Boro since the 1971/72 season.

It is the 94th league meeting between the sides and the hosts go into the game with plenty of confidence after a convincing 3-0 home will over Michael O’Neill’s Stoke City at home at the weekend.

Former North End full back Darnell Fisher, who made a January move to the north east, could line up against his former team-mates – although he has been on the bench for the last couple of game for Warnock’s men.

    Team News
Manager Alex Neil welcomed back Liam Lindsay to the bench at the weekend, but he told the press that the on loan Stoke City centre half had only had one day of training, so he may not be ready to start.

Late checks on Greg Cunningham and Ryan Ledson will need to be made, the pair missing the weekend’s trip to Wycombe. There is no change in the availability of the long-term absentees.

Neil Warnock said that Darnell Fisher could return to side against the Lilywhites, with Djed Spence having picked up a knock against Stoke City at the weekend.

He told the club's official website, mfc.co.uk: "Darnell’s got a nasty Achilles problem, so I didn’t want to rush him back - especially with [Anfernee] Dijksteel out. Against his old club I’m sure he’ll be busting a gut to be involved.

“I’ll see how they are because Djed [Spence] picked up a knock as well. I think both [Ashley] Fletcher and [Marcus] Tavernier are going to be training with us today. They could be back before the international break.”

    Match Officials
The match official for Tuesday night’s game is Oliver Langford, taking charge of his first PNE game since our first home match after the first lockdown.

That was the referee’s second visit to Deepdale that season, having been the man with the whistle for our live TV game against West Bromwich.

The previous season, he was in charge of three of our Championship matches in 2018/19. His last being the 1-0 derby day win over Blackburn Rovers at Ewood Park, when Daniel Johnson scored the winner. The ref was also the match official at the end of January, as the Lilywhites triumphed 2-0 at the Bet365 Stadium against Stoke City.

Prior to that he refereed our Carabao Cup third round tie with Tuesday’s opponents Middlesbrough back in September and before that it had been 12 months since he last took charge of a game at Deepdale.

The West Midlands official, prior to the aforementioned Boro game, last took charge of a clash with Cardiff City at Deepdale in September 2017, when the Lilywhites ran out 3-0 winners against then Neil Warnock’s Bluebirds. The previous season he took charge of another three North End games. His first was the live Sky victory over Wigan Athletic back in September 2016, his second, our first match of the new year, at Burton Albion and his third the goalless draw away at Barnsley in February.

He also twice took charge of the Lilywhites in 2015/16; the goalless draw against Derby County, when goalkeeper Anders Lindegaard made his debut for the club, and another trip to Middlesbrough. His first game in change of North End before that was the clash with Swindon at the County Ground in November 2014.

This will be his second Boro game of the season, having officiated their home win over Barnsley back in October. Overall, he has refereed 25 games so far this season, that have seen 92 cautions and four red cards. He will be assisted by Jonathan Hunt and Michael George, with experienced Championship match official Andy Haines acting as the fourth official for the game.

    MACS VIEW

Firstly the omens are not good for this the ref gave Albion a dodgy last minute penalty also seem to think he gave another duff decision at Swindon years back.
We are playing a side we rarely beat but then there is the Colin effect, he doesn't have a good record against us which again points to a home victory.
We are now in our usual end of seson slump however this one seems to have started before the first lockdown
Don't think we are helped by empty stadiums and also consider that since the restart in June last year we have played close on just over 50 games actually think some players are knackered
Some of the performances have been pitiful luckily for the manager the lack of support has stopped the support giving him grief in the grounds stil need two wins

Middlesbrough cruised past Preston, who had midfielder Alan Browne and manager Alex Neil sent off in a chaotic match at the Riverside in the Championship.

In a torrid first half for the visitors, Preston defender Jordan Storey sliced Yannick Bolasie's cross into his own net before skipper Browne was sent off for an off-the-ball clash with Sam Morsy on the halfway line.

North End manager Neil had a lengthy verbal exchange with referee Oliver Langford after the half-time whistle before being sent to the stands by the official.

Against 10 men, Middlesbrough repeatedly cut through the visitors' defence, with Marcus Tavernier doubling the lead in the 51st minute, but they were unable to make the victory even more convincing.

Preston were hoping to do a league double over Middlesbrough for the first time since 1972, and the fixture could have been so different had centre-back Sepp van den Berg seen his shot hit the back of the net instead of cannoning off the crossbar in the 20th minute.

Two minutes later Storey diverted the ball into his own goal under little pressure.

Alex Neil continued to shout instructions from the stands after his sending off at half-time
Browne and Morsy came together in the 36th minute, with Morsy going to ground after Browne appeared to have raised his arm towards the Middlesbrough midfielder's face.

And Langford's decision to show Browne a straight red card was not without controversy, with Preston boss Neil also sent to the stands after a lengthy argument with the officials at the break.

Tavernier replaced Morsy at half-time and doubled Boro's advantage, heading in a rebound after Chuba Akpom had hit the underside of the bar.

Neil Warnock's side cantered to their win in the closing stages, moving up to eighth in the table, five points off a play-off place, while Preston fell to 16th.

Preston manager Alex Neil told BBC Radio Lancashire:

"The referee stopped us potentially getting three points tonight. We've done really well, I think that's the first time I've ever lost against a Neil Warnock team. So that's really frustrating for me because we're tailor-made to play against these types of teams.

"We've started really well and he's denied us three points that are really crucial for us.

"It's hard to accept and understand how the referee can see Alan [Browne's] part and not Sam Morsy's part which has basically changed the game in their favour. When their player's being the aggressor, and our player reacted off the back of their aggression.

"The fact that we got a red and they got nothing just beggars belief really."

Middlesbrough manager Neil Warnock told BBC Tees:

"I said to my players before the game, it's not how we play tonight, it's [about] coming away with three points.

"Once they went down to ten men it's difficult to create. It's a difficult thing to win against ten men in football.

"You won't believe me, but I haven't seen it yet. And to be honest I'm not that bothered. The referee was in a good position, you've got to take it that he saw enough to give him a red card."
