Especially for you (you know who you are). As there were 4 Leeds on one side and only one on the other, the result was never going to be in doubt. If anyone has any other England Scotland videos...... Oh, and does anyone have any of Scotland in 1974 World Cup, I recall Bremner was outstanding.
Thanks for that. With a team like that, Scotland should have done a lot more. As I recall we were the first unbeaten team ever to go out of the WC (in '74). Should have done so much better. But, as they say, you can have the best players in the world, but it doesn't mean you have the best team. Have to also remark that this was one of the poorest england teams that I ever watched. Indeed, I can't remember some of the names. Have to commend Shilton, though. What would the score have been if he wasn't playing? Actually, not having watched many england games, it would be interesting to hear supporters views on england teams that had either Banks, Shilton, or Clemence in them. Was it their invincibility that got england so many good results, or would england have been as successful with a more ordinary 'keeper. Let's face it, they weren't just world class, they were stellar! And that comes from a Scot!.
Ordinary keepers? How about Peter Bonetti that took over from Gordon Banks in 1070 against West Germany. Think England might have won that one had they had a better keeper.
Slightly before my time, so relying on heresay, but Bonetti was supposedly far from consistent world class.
I think you’ve answered that, it’s the other side of your best players don’t make the best team comment. The 1966 team seemed to be much more than the sum of its parts. True though that Banks was world class but players like Moore, scum-Charlton seemed it too though I saw them look ordinary when they played club games (admittedly that was v Leeds)
That was the world up where the Zaire president gave all his players new cars for qualifying, then took them back for losing 2-0 to Scotland, was a great 0-0 v Brazil with both teams having good chances.
I wasn't slagging the great man 20/20, he did more good things than bad. I remember B.Clough calling the Polish keeper a clown.
