Diakite will leave Lazio on a free this summer and he has been axed from the first team as his contract nears its end. Liverpool have been strongly linked with the 26-year-old, while the likes of Napoli and Roma have been credited with an interest. Reports in Italy have claimed that Sunderland are now firmly in the running and although Diakite's agent says there have been no talks, he has not ruled them out. "It was almost all done with Napoli. Unfortunately, we have different time-sensitive requirements and have therefore decided to take different paths," agent Ulisse Savini said. "English football is intriguing and Di Canio has brought great enthusiasm, but for now I haven't spoken to anyone from Sunderland. If they were to call, we'd be honoured to talk to them."
