A crowd of 3011 saw Swindon take the points in tight game at the Globe, Benson's early strike in the second half to put Paolo Di Canio's league leaders ever closer to a place in League 1 next season.
Morecambe should have taken an early when Carlton managed to evade the visitors defence but his shot clipped the foot of keeper Fotheringham and went behind for a corner. A shout for a penalty was also turned down as the league leaders struggle to impose themselves on the game much to the annoyance of their flamboyant Italian manager.
The first half was mainly played out in the middle of the pitch with goal attempts at a premium, Swindon started to pass the ball well however the lively Carlton was always a threat to the visitors back line with McCormack doing a sterling job keeping the home forwards at bay.
Finally just before half time a Connell shot for Swindon went wide whilst Carlton also went close at the other end.
54 seconds after the 2nd half started Swindon scored a cross from the right was nodded back across the goal to Benson who scored easily from close range (0-1)
Benson's strike visibly relaxed the visitors and they started to control the game looking dangers down both wins were early substitute Holmes adding a bit of speed to the attack.
Morecambe struggled to get forward and the visitors seemed to be cruising towards 3 points until deep into the game when they eventually had a period of sustained pressure a shot from Curran was narrowly wide, in added time Curran's deflected header hit the bar although Benson should have sealed the game when missing from close range.
On reflection Swindon probably deserved the points although it may have been different if the Shrimps had made more effort earlier on.

Morecambe did not perform good enough. We was second best to many balls. We back passed it back to Roche rather than going forward & taking the game to Swindon. We hoofed the ball in desperation & kicked the ball anywhere hoping it would fall for one of our players. Apart from Alessandra in the first 5 minutes hitting his shot wide when only the keeper to beat & Fenton hitting the post we did cause much threat to their back four for most of the match. If we had taken the game to Swindon by attacking them then the result may have been different. Thought Kevin Ellison should have been subbed earlier rather than taking off Alessandra first. Also Izak Reid should have been brought on earlier rather than the last few minutes to be able to make an impact. Would like to see Joe Mwasile given a chance as heard some good reports about this lad. We need some new blood in midfield to be able to work with McDonald & two experienced strikers to partner Burrow, Redshaw or Alessandra in the summer. If we had gone into this game the way we did against Southend, Cheltenham & Oxford we could have got something from this as from todays showing Swindon were nothing special. Di Canio was good entertainment even if the football was not up to much for the home fans.

Maclad...Hope you enjoyed your day & if you get fed up with North End you can come & watch the shrimps for £199 for a season.:emoticon-0105-wink:

themaclad. To be honest they all played poor. I have seen better performances than yesterday where they would have attacked teams. Andy Parrish seems to give his all & chips in with supplying goals so didn't mind Andy getting man of the match. The one thing this lad would do is give his all if in a white shirt something that Westley is not getting at Preston at the moment. If not carefull can see a few Preston fans jumping ship if results don't pick up & they hear that season tickets at Morecambe are £199. I suppose if you ever get fed up of the dross at Preston you can go & watch Fleetwood with being on your doorstep. They will probably be our local rivals next season unless Wrexham can win their remaining games.
