Trippier's playing his balls off so far, if we stay up and he's cited as a key signing, he'll be a Kilcline style folk hero for us, ie we didn't get him at his prime but he turned out to be priceless. Hence I'm somewhat reticent about including him yet.
Very good for Leeds and okay for us, if a liability. But still as a player he was never top class and can't be included alongsode Rush, Barnes Butt, Kluivert blah blah. Ditto Woodgate.
But in no way would you be kicking yourself thinking "if only we had Forster when he was at Southampton"
Was solid never anything more, the fact he was an England International is more a testament to the fact of how easily you could get in the England squad rather than his quality. Couldn't get past Krul in the pecking order, hence he was never "the one that got away", however to his credit he never wanted to be a Steve Harper style back up and did the right thing by leaving. Dubravka and Given will always be our best recent keepers. But yeah Forster is probably the best I can come up with too - Dave Bessant was rubbish everywhere, Krul was overrated, Hooper was dire, and Jak Alnwick was always second rate.
Shaka started brilliantly, then faded badly; after his first season, Pavel then reclaimed the no 1 slot, then Given was bought and owned the position. Had a decent career at West Ham etc afterwards, but promised a lot more than he ended up amounting to.
Woodgate for me is the best CB I have seen for us in all the time I’ve followed the Toon even allowing for Albert.
Meh. Problem is he was ALWAYS injured. Played 28 games out of a possible 140 or so for us. What's the point having the best player in the world if they're never available and you can never depend on them?
True but it still doesn’t stop him from being the best CB we’ve had in my lifetime. I knew/remembered he’d been injured a lot but didn’t realise that it was quite to that extent. Real pity as he was a great player and it wasn’t as if he was doing an Owen or a Marcelino.
