But is it not the case that more CO2 creates more plant growth? I am not a scientist but from a layman's point of view this seems a reasonable theory.
Yes, plants do absorb CO2, that's what created fossil fuel in the first place. It's a case of getting the balance right, and this is the problem. There is plenty of CO2 in the air for all the plant life, and what's left from burning these fossil fuels has gone up in the air and turned Earth into a giant greenhouse.
When I was on assignment in Congo in 2007 I photographed an area of the port that was the area of several football pitches, piled high with logs with Chinese characters on them. China has an insatiable demand for hardwoods. It has deforested its own country and The Philippines. I lived in Chinas for 5 years and it is apparent that all trees other than those in very remote areas are relatively young. Large areas of the Indonesian rain forest are now being logged, and similarly Brazil. There are new forests being planted but these do not have the capacity to absorb CO2 that mature rain forest trees have. I can see that the excess of CO2 is man-made, but in my view the country responsible for most of the CO2 creation is also responsible for the decreasing capacity of the world to absorb the gas.
Saw the same thing in Malaysia 5 years ago, with palm oil plantations replacing the rainforests. They have brought wealth to the country, and education to the population while destroying wildlife. So many products that you buy contain palm oil.
Yes, I was just concentrating on the worst but Malaysia has largely been deforested, especially in the Johore Bahru area where it is mile after mile of palm oil. Malaysia, though, is a very small land area compared with the others. What I saw in Congo is also going on in Angola.
A lot of individuals are making personal decisions in their lives which cost money but benefit the environment, but commercial decisions are always financially based. Claiming to be "Green" is quite trendy, but you have to read the small print to see which claims are genuine and which ones border on the fraudulent.
https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-beds-bucks-herts-58649286 And not before time. These people are irresponsible morons. This kind of nonsense must be cracked down on. If not, any little crackpot group with a stupid agenda will be able to cause unlimited chaos and threaten lives. It isn't protest. It is attacking the fabric of our society.
WARNING: This'll put you off your breakfast... https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-58636969 I'd rather go vegan than tuck into those. Even seafood invertebrates are iffy in my opinion. But I'm absolutely drawing the line at this.
One newspaper reporting that cabbage pickers are being offered £30 an hour on a farm somewhere. HGV drivers must be absolutely coining it in - and good luck to them. Our infrastructure in the UK has decayed and degraded over decades. We haven't had a Government worth the name in about 60 years. We won't be putting that right overnight.
60 years? That would be the MacMillan government (You've never had it so good). A consummate politician who didn't need any spin doctors.
Life expectancy shortening for the first time in 40 years. Energy crisis, shortages, talk of rationing... It's back to the 1970's just without the Unions
Just drove across London to SE7. Every petrol station I passed was either closed, or had 30 cars or more queueing outside it. Running out of fried chicken is one thing. Running out of petrol is something else. Nobody trusts Boris and his chinless wonders. It comes down to a straight choice between having a full tank in YOUR car, or somebody else having it. Petrol is no longer taken for granted as generally available. We know how quickly people can get really mean. We cannot be far away now from similar scenes at supermarkets. This Government has failed miserably to protect vital infrastructure. They talk and talk, but their words are worthless.
