Sorry, Dickp, but for a couple of years I looked forward to seeing Pope between the sticks for us and become a Charlton Legend along with Bolder and Deano. I always knew he was the real deal even when he had his shaky spell. Top character too.
In the past Charlton Legends did not come along that often, but it was always worth the wait when they did. But of course, only real Football Clubs have footballing legends for their fans to admire. As a matter of senior management policy, the Leisure Centre and Hospitality suites that now occupy the site in Floyd Road where a Football Club used to stand won't be producing any new Charlton Legends. However some of the old ones are still employed from time to time to entertain customers who don't mind paying for VIP packages. My Only Desire TM
That is nonsense. There is still a Football Club as long as there are people still going. Yes Rd has done a huge amount of harm. But nothing that can't be repaired, when he leaves. Lardiman you are letting hyperbole get the better of you.
I would rather over-state my case than drift into resignation and acceptance of what is happening - which is exactly what they want. Our Club has no reason to exist under RD except to balance his books. Ambition to win and do well has been removed as a matter of company policy. All Charlton are currently being allowed to do under Karl Robinson is to climb out of the hole we fell into because of the incompetence of the regime in 2015-16. We all know that once back in the Championship there will be a return to zero expectations and crippling austerity, along with the ongoing player farm turnover. Karl Robinson will be expected to keep Charlton in the backwaters of the Championship indefinitely (13th to 21st place) on a pittance of a budget. Real Football Clubs try to better themselves for the pride and respect of their fans - even if they have no resources, they have their dreams. At Charlton there is no ambition to play better football. There is just window dressing and hospitality, the offer of a nice afternoon out for tourists and other bored consumers. Some new gates, a lick of paint, and the words of an anthem that has long since lost its meaning copyrighted and slapped onto the badge and the merchandise in the 'superstore'. I'll be damned if I ever accept that crap.
Lots of coverage in the papers today on Nick Pope, and great to see him handling hilmself so well in the media spotlight yesterday. Southgate has picked 4 keepers for this squad - on all known form I can’t see how Joe Hart goes to Russia ahead of Popey. It’s beginning to look as though Meire made a very expensive mistake there.
Pope's valuation is apparently around £20million now. Gomez at around £15mil currently I reckon. Give or take £5 million on each due to current media hype.
Should add Gomez is becoming a victim of continuously being played out of position. High profile mistakes against teams who play cross field balls have resulted in several goals. Klopp needs to start doing right by him.
We (Meire) gave Pope away for £1.3m with a rumoured paltry £750,000 paid up front. You couldn’t make it up. Any other CEO in a private company that lost their firm that amount of money in one deal would be blacklisted by the FSA ! Sean Dyche’s little ginger eyes must have lit up when he asked Meire the asking price.
It's similar to Brown selling our gold and telling the worldwide market that we would accept any silly price.... ALL STOCK HAS TO GO!
Gomez is valued at 50 Million and Pope is one of the top keepers in the Premiership. We gave them away for peanuts. Has this Club got anything right in four years?
