Sir Jim Ratcliffe of Ineos, the great British (based in Monaco for personal tax reasons) industrialist has put in a cheeky late bid for Chelsea.

    Perfect match.

Congratulations to Carlo Ancelotti, the only manger to win titles in England, Italy, Germany, France and now Spain. Always a favourite with me because of his place in the great AC Milan team and as their last really successful manager (only the two European Cups with them). Plus he’s modest, talks sense and has a great sense of humour. And was clever enough to get out of Everton.

A great achievment....at Milan. I think most of us would be able to win a title in Germany or France with the tools he had at his disposal, and the hysterical implosion of Barcelona after Messi left virtually handed the title to Real before a ball had been kicked.

Still, same as you, think he's a likeable character so well done Carlo

Uefa announces further sanctions on Russian clubs and national teams amid Ukraine invasion

There have been shows of support for Ukraine at football matches since Russia launched its invasion of the country in February
Russia have been barred from competing in this summer's women's Euro 2022, while Russian clubs will also be banned from Uefa competitions next season, says Europe's football governing body.

Uefa has announced that Russia's bid to host the men's Euro 2028 or Euro 2032 tournaments is now ineligible too.

The sanctions come amid Russia's continued invasion of Ukraine.

In February, Russian clubs and national teams were suspended by Fifa and Uefa "until further notice".

On Monday, Uefa announced that Portugal - who lost to Russia in the play-offs - will replace them at Euro 2022, which takes place in July.

Russia's women's national team will also no longer compete in European qualification for the 2023 World Cup, while the men's side is barred from the 2022-23 Nations League.

They will automatically be ranked fourth in group two of League B, meaning they will be relegated at the end of the group phase.

The ban imposed on clubs means there will be no Russian teams in the men's and women's Champions League, Europa League, or Europa Conference League during the 2022-23 campaign.

In March, Uefa confirmed Russia had declared an interest in hosting Euro 2028 - as well as the UK and Ireland, and Turkey - and the 2032 edition.

UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson said Russia's interest was "beyond satire" and "beyond comprehension".

Uefa said the bid was ineligible in accordance with article 16.02 of the Bid Regulations, which states that "each bidder shall ensure that it does not act in a manner that could bring Uefa, any other bidder, the bidding procedure or European football into disrepute".

Uefa's latest sanctions also ban Russia from the 2021-23 European Under-21 Championship, as well as youth and futsal competitions.

An updated qualifying process for the Champions League has been published, which shows benefits for Scottish teams.

The Premiership champions will go directly into the competition's group stages, while the second-placed side will now go into the third round of qualifying rather than the second.

Diego Maradona: Argentina legend's 'Hand of God' shirt sells for £7.1m at auction

Diego Maradona inspired Argentina to World Cup glory in 1986
The shirt Diego Maradona wore when he scored the 'Hand of God' goal and much vaunted 'goal of the century' for Argentina against England at the 1986 World Cup has sold for a record £7.1m.

It is the highest price ever paid for a piece of sports memorabilia.

Former England midfielder Steve Hodge put it up for auction 36 years after he swapped it with Maradona following the famous quarter-final in Mexico.

After Maradona died in November 2020, Hodge said the shirt was not for sale.

In December that year Hodge said he had "people knocking on my door non-stop" and that reports he was looking to sell the shirt were false.

"I find it disrespectful and totally wrong," he added at the time. "It's not for sale. I am not trying to sell it."

Watch: Why the Maradona football kit is so special
Auction house Sotheby sold the shirt for more than its estimated price, which was between £4m and £6m.

"This is arguably the most coveted football shirt to ever come to auction, and so it is fitting that it now holds the auction record for any object of its kind," said Brahm Wachter, Sotheby's head of streetwear and modern collectables.

The previous highest fee paid for a shirt worn during a sports match was held by New York Yankees legend Babe Ruth's baseball jersey, which sold for $5.6m (£4.4m) in 2019.

In the same year the original Olympic manifesto, penned in 1892, sold for $8.8m (about £7m) to become the most expensive piece of sports memorabilia.

Ex-Nottingham Forest, Aston Villa, Leeds and Tottenham midfielder Hodge, 59, who appeared in two World Cups for England and won 24 caps, had owned the iconic blue Argentina away shirt since swapping it with Maradona in the tunnel at the Azteca Stadium in Mexico City after the game, which Argentina won 2-1.

There has been some confusion about the shirt since Sotheby's in London put it up for auction in April, with Maradona's family claiming it was not the shirt he had on when he scored the infamous 'Hand of God' goal.

During the past 36 years, the shirt, manufactured by Le Coq Sportif, has been publicly displayed as the one worn by the Argentine great. It was most recently housed at the National Football Museum in Manchester.

Sotheby said in its listing online that the shirt was matched to images of Maradona wearing it for both goals.

The two he scored against England are among the most famous goals by Maradona, who is widely regarded as one of football's greatest-ever players.

His punching of the ball beyond goalkeeper Peter Shilton to score the controversial opening goal in the second half came minutes before he netted what was years later voted the goal of the century in a poll by football's world governing body Fifa.

Maradona went on to inspire his country to win the trophy, beating West Germany 3-2 in the final

    Does football need a 60-minute 'stop-clock'?

Real Madrid's comeback win over Manchester City was one of the most dramatic games in Champions League history - but it was not without controversy.

Having forced extra time with Rodrygo's stunning late double before edging ahead in the tie through Karim Benzema's penalty, Real did what most teams would do: they ran down the clock with a masterful exhibition of game management.

However, referee Daniele Orsato had added just three minutes to the second period of extra time, and then blew his whistle with 10 seconds remaining, just when City keeper Ederson was about to boot the ball up the pitch.

While some have eulogised Real after another stunning fightback, others have used the latter stages of the game to debate the rules around the ball being in play.

Writing in the Daily Mail, former referee Mark Clattenburg suggested football introducing 60-minute matches with a stop-clock to eradicate gamesmanship.

Other sports like basketball and American football use a stop-clock, and it's a straightforward concept: essentially, the clock is stopped whenever the ball is not in play, for incidents including injuries, substitutions and the referee dishing out cautions.

Football's law-making body the International Football Association Board (Ifab) has previously looked into the possibility of introducing a stop-clock.

In this season's Premier League, the average 'ball in play' time is 55 minutes and three seconds - the lowest it has been in over a decade.

BBC Sport - using Opta data - looks at some of the ball in play stats to see how each team performs.

They could do this for the Championship too....can you imagine the figures for Preston?

Carlo talking to Kroos and Marcelo during extra time v City. Kroos has revealed that Ancelotti was asking his senior players for advice on substitutions.

No wonder players seem to love him, a manager so comfortable in himself that he can involve others even in the heat of the moment….

I don’t think Carlo is too bothered by what others might have said. He’s got this team back from the dead against 3 teams better, on paper, than them 3 times in this competition now. Its Real Madrid, he knows his job hangs by a thread at all times anyway…….

I dunno? Football games could take hours if they started doing that, I might not get to bed in Thailand before midday for evening games in England!

Seriously, I expect players would still find ways of wasting time without stopping the clock when they needed to get a result.
