morgan, bradshaw, doble, richards, wildig. any others?
I would keep Morgan despite his obvious faults as he is a real warrior and a useful provider if not a regular goalscorer. I would not keep Wildig, Bradshaw, or Doble as they are not good enough. In this bracket I would also include Parry and Purdie who have both been disappointing. I would keep Richards despite some poor games this year as he has been moved all over the place and his form has suffered from being made captain (Captain Grandison anyone? - I think he would be great). Reluctantly, I would also release Wright though his goals have been a massive plus for us in his first two years.
It would be nice if we could sign Hurst, Mambo and Edwards to bolster our defence. I know Jones has been a regular and he is a great trier but we have let in so many headers and goals from set pieces this year that I wonder if he is good enough for League 1.
I'm in thinking that parry has one more year of contract. Agree that Mambo, Hurst, and Edwards should be signed up.
Also to note that we seem to have strikers come here and not score for us yet can score elsewhere. So perhaps the midfield is as crucial to sort as the defense.
Yes, I think Parry does have another year but GT tends to settle the contract with players who disappoint and Parry comes into that category for me. I agree with you about midfield - we are often outrun and outpassed in this area and perhaps we need one real quality signing in there.
I'd keep Morgan for sure. He's had a good season I think. He'll never score a bucket of goals but he does a huge amount for the team and never stops working the opposition. With an Eaves-a-like alongside him, he's excellent. And I get the impression he does a lot for team spirit and morale, which is not to be dismissed lightly.
Richards I'd keep too. He's taken a ridiculous amount of unfair criticism that to me reflects more on his critics' poor understanding of the game. I don't think anybody else has had to play regularly in three different positions but Richards has just got on with it and kept busy. His form has fluctuated but he's still been at the heart of things and never gone missing, which can't be said of some others. He's a quality player and I don't think we can afford to be giving those away.
Wildig - one for the future, if we can afford to keep him on that basis. Skilful player who just needs time to develop and to learn to take on a more prominent role.
Bradshaw - sorry to say I don't think it's going to happen for him at Shrewsbury. With luck, he might be one of those who reignites his career with a fresh start. Heaven knows there've been a few of those. His all round play has improved this season but his finishing has deserted him and, overall, he just hasn't taken the chance to establish himself.
Doble - skilful forward but was out of his depth against Sheff Utd (not the easiest opportunity to be given). I think he could be a goalscorer somewhere but probably not here.
Wright - let's see how he returns from injury. Another who's taken far too much ignorant criticism from some fans, overlooking the huge contribution his goals, assists and general play have made. We've missed his creativity and he looked to be getting back to good form when he got injured. I'll be sorry if he doesn't get a new deal.
I hope we don't clear the decks again this summer, assuming we stay up that is. We've struggled this season but, with hindsight, that was always likely and we didn't help ourselves by coming into the season with an understrength squad and having to play catch up with loanees all season. There's still a lot of quality in our squad and we should be looking to build on this, not scrap it and start again. Keeping Weale, Grandison and Taylor, signing Mambo and finding a couple of good strikers would be huge positives. I'd hope we can have a more comfortable mid-table sort of season next time. For me that would be success, just as staying up would be this time.
Right do we sign the loanees?
Many seem to be talking about signing up some of the loanees come the summer. Do they make our squad better or are they still not good enough to help us improve next season? Admittedly I am impressed with Mambo, Edwards, Gayle, McGinn, Eaves, and Hurst but are they the types of players we should be signing or should we be looking for stronger candidates. Is a combination of Grandison, Mambo, Jones, Edwards (when injuries are sorted) and Goldson in CD enough for the season? Hurst was subbed on Saturday for Purdie as he was being beaten, yet is Gayle a better singing? Gayle can play at LB so he does offer that extra area. McGinn looks great but sometimes disappears during a match - we have the usual and I think biggest problem of having a weak midfield with CM often being overridden by the opposition and the wingers not always doing a great job of supply and cover. I know we have no chance of Eaves signing due to his contract length, a very infinitesimally tiny chance of a return on loan so we definitely need at least one if not two or three strikers next season as Bradshaw and Doble aren't up to it as lead players, both have good promise but not enough for a starting place. Will Morgan be here next season? 7 goals is not a great return for someone who claims he is not a 'hold-up' type of player. I know he has some great attributes and causes huge issues for opposition defence but we need someone who can play with him if he re-signs for us.
Oh, what happened to those Irish striker fellas we were going to sign? I can't remember their names atm.
Liam Boyce and something else from Cliftonville wasn't it?!
I agree with pretty much all Shrewdchemic says. Add in JJ, whom I would keep, and I think we've got the basis of a decent platform on which to build next year if we do bring in the loanees. I think our defence is actually pretty decent - we've conceded fewer goals than all below us (except Oldham - they've conceded one fewer but will make that up with their two games in hand) and a couple of teams above us, with the likes of Coventry and Bournemouth having conceded just one goal fewer over the course of the season. If you take out our diabolical defensive period when anyone and everyone scored against us, we look pretty steady. The addition of a first choice left back as well as all our loanees and new deals for Goldson and JJ would leave us pretty well stocked at the back, especially if we can improve on our midfield and forwards (just 50 goals this season is not good enough - Chelsea have something like 110!) which will allow us to keep the ball better, hassle opponents and alleviate the pressure on the defence.
So, assuming that everyone we offer a contract to accepts it (within reason) this would be my pick of players still with us next season (including loanees) without selling anyone still under contract: Weale, Gayle, Hurst, Grandison, Jones, Mambo, Jacobson, Goldson, Richards, Summerfield, D. Mac, McGinn, Hall, Parry, Morgan, Taylor.
Anyon, Purdie and Doble may well all be under contract for another year, but we don't know and I've not been able to find anything concrete. Edwards I would sign if one of the defenders rejected us, and Wright depends on how he responds to his injury. Sadly, I think his time may be up after the latest setback. Doble should go on loan if he's still with us - I think he does have potential but isn't ready for League One.
Hall needs to go - he's simply not of the standard required and 5 central midfielders is too many. Wildig and Bradshaw have potential and I think will both have decent careers in League football, but we can't afford to keep them on and give them game time which is what they need to develop unless Turner feels they are of a standard to be able to make a difference with the first team next year.
That would leave us needing a left back, two wingers and three strikers. Not a radical overhaul, but a chance for some real quality to be added in crucial areas.
The problem with Ryan Doble is our strikers have had a miserable season and everyone expects him to be the god-sent answer to all our problems, when in reality he's never had an extended run of games and is actually described as a talented no.10/in-the-hole kinda player. What you waiting for GT? What if we stuck him behind the main striker in a 4-4-1-1?
Wildig- could be a good player but has shown little IMO if i'm honest. Doubt he'll get fresh terms
Wright has served us well, maybe a bit out of his depth in this league. New widemen needed if he goes
The bald eagle must not be played wide left if he stays.
Bradshaw hasn't been AS bad as everyone has said (in a few starts and 15 sub minutes) but still probably needs to kick start something lower down.
Think we'll sign one of Gayle and Hurst if they're both available but the latter might be more in demand. Same goes for McGinn and Edwards. Mambo would be another good signing- Grandison, Collins, Wildig, McAllister we've all tried out on loan then picked up for nothing or next too later on.
Sorry, who is this?
Give you a clue- a watchful guardian. A silent protector. A Dark Knight.
Sorry, that picture is indescribably lame. Didn't know it would be that small..
Youngsters in apart from Doble. Oldsters out.
Is that fact or desire kds?
Is JJ a youngster?
Now I see what you mean!!
Players offered new contracts:-
Jon Taylor Aaron Wildig Connor Goldson Jermaine Grandison Tom Bradshaw Ryan Woods
Players not offered new contracts:-
Mark Wright Marvin Morgan Rob Purdie Matt Richards Ryan Doble
Second year scholar Jack Gwilliams who was offered a pro contract for next season has accepted the clubs offer.
No mention of JJ. Big year for Bradshaw now, and Wildig too.
New captain/ slaphead needed..
well done graham for looking to the future. i do hope gt is part of that future, or could he be upstairs holding the hand of another manager. i have always campaigned for bradders, mainly because of his achievements in the reserves. he has been given 3 lots of 90 minutes and i assume he has done enough for gt. what is needed now is at least 2 experienced strikers and some midfield experience.
Jacobson had a bolt on extension in his contract regarding us being promoted. Glad to hear that ad he had been playing well.
